Food Establishments Changing Communities

The only way to keep your health is to eat what you don’t want, drink what you don’t like, and do what you’d rather not.
Mark Twain

I do not agree with the Mark Twain saying, but what I do know is the best food in the world in the wrong setting is not worth it to me. And at this stage my life, I look for more.

Many years ago, the sales world said, “sell the sizzle and not the steak”. But, as I have thought about it over the years, I have come to the conclusion that it is about atmosphere for me.

I have a local coffee shop in my town. When I want to have a meeting I go there. First, because they are local, but also because they have a friendly atmosphere.

Since I started this business, I think more and more I look for positive impact in their community. For instance, what do they give back to the community? Years, our newspaper promoted the “local” angle because, if for no other reason, more money remained in the community. There is a lot more to it than that, but more money remaining in your hometown, that is awesome!

You may ask, how does this become positive news? Can it be positive news?

I think so.

What do I look for? Places that change the community they are located in. This means they serve up good food, have a great atmosphere AND bring positive change to their community.

For instance, we published a story about a pizza place where you can donate money to provide pizza for the homeless or the down and out.

These “positive” food establishments change their community. Helping the homeless, meals for children and sponsoring events that boost the community they live in.

These businesses are the type of business we enjoy getting behind.

If you know of a restaurant or cafe doing great things in their community, please let us know. (Maybe one day, we will have a roving restaurant reporter.)
