This time of year the starlings appear. Some people think they are a
nuisance but I think they’re very entertaining. They will fly onto my
porch and eat the dry cat food. They usually appear when it has snowed
to eat the dry cat food. The cat food will be completely gone and
hundreds of little bird footprints are seen in the snow.

I’ve read that they can learn to repeat words.

The common starling, a medium passerine bird with glossy black
plumage with a metallic sheen is what is in my area of Kansas.

They are beneficial at reducing pests and insects in a farmer’s field but
also are a pest at the bird feeders. Bird enthusiasts find them annoying
and think of ways to keep them out of the bird feeders. They can
destroy crops.

One day my cat heard them on the front porch and excitedly listened to
them while they ate the cat food. She stalked them from the inside
door, and the door is wood.
