The American Legion is celebrating its 102nd anniversary. It was chartered and incorporated on September 16, 1919 by Congress as a patriotic veterans organization devoted to mutual helpfulness.
But earlier than that on March 15, it was organized by 1000 officers and men of the American Expeditionary Forces in Paris. {{more}}
The national headquarters is in Indianapolis, Indiana and the American Legion’s motto is for “God and Country.”
In 1944, the American Legion was the originator of the G.I. Bill.
In Kansas in the center of the USA, Jim Tharp, Commander of the American Legion in Smith Center, organized a Sunday lunch for veterans and spouses downtown Smith Center.
