National Motivation and Inspiration Day was thought up by motivational speaker Kevin L. McCrudden and subsequently recognized by the United States House of Representatives on December 18, 2001, with the passage of H.Res.308. McCrudden created the day in part as a reaction to the tragedies of September 11, 2001, and the Congressional resolution similarly states that “a renewed focus on motivation and inspiration is particularly important in the wake of the tragedies of September 11, 2001.” In this sense, the loss and sacrifice of those on that day motivates and inspires us in our own lives on today’s holiday.
The primary goal of the day is to help people focus on maintaining motivation and inspiration in their lives. According to the Congressional resolution, motivation and inspiration have played a role in the achievements of society, and both are needed by children and adults: inspiration is needed to define goals and motivation is needed to achieve them, and with both of these things success and happiness can be achieved. The beginning of the year was chosen as the time for the holiday because it is “often a time of reflection, planning, and goal setting.”
How to Observe National Motivation and Inspiration Day
Observe the day by acknowledging the importance of motivation and inspiration in your daily life and renewing your focus on it. Plan and set goals and strategies for the year ahead, and work to be the best you can be and to reach your full potential as you go forward. Today can also be used to reflect on the lives lost on September 11, 2001, and to be motivated and inspired by their lives, in order to live your own life more fully.
