Book Signing With Mildred Schindler Janzen

After Russia began bombing the Ukraine, Mildred Schindler Janzen walked into her wellness center in Ellsworth, Kansas, looking forlorn. Her friend asked her if she were all right. She said, “No, here we go again. 70 years later.”

Mildred is 94 years old and now has written a book, “Surviving Hitler, Evading Stalin.” She spoke at the United Methodist Church in Cawker City, Kansas to a crowd full of questions and applause. The Cawker City Public Library sponsored the event.

Her daughter, Karen, helps her with book signings, and talks, and her favored place is in schools. This happened, it is the true story of my life, she wanted them to know, it’s not made up.

She told many stories of the Nazis and one where a Nazi told her when she was a young girl to go feed the chickens. Mildred didn’t want to. The chickens are fed, it’s three o’clock in the afternoon. Feed the chickens. So she did. The Nazis took their share of eggs from farmers. But what that man didn’t know, that Mildred’s mother had chickens locked up in the hog shed. So they had eggs to eat.

She reflected, would I have had the mindset to save my children like my mother saved me? Her mother was always quiet in a corner, praying, and God answered.

Her mother lived to almost 100 and in a rest home that she loved to be in.

Mildred said that she is so proud to be an American, which was followed by applause.

Surviving Hitler, Evading Stalin, is available from Sunbury Press; Amazon, and Barnes & Noble. Author website: SheryeSimmonsGreen.com.

One woman’s remarkable escape from Nazi Germany is written on the bookmarks she gives out. Her daughter, Karen, said how many other stories are there that are untold. Probably hundreds.

Cawker City, Kansas is famous for the largest ball of twine.
