Let’s go to a county fair.
I live in Keene, NH, and the Cheshire Fair comes to town each year. I have taken my grandkids to see friends in 4H and booths and displays. This year was no different.
So, the big question is ‘why.” (When I lived in Vermont, I visited the Vermont State Fair and the Addison County Fair. As a child, we had a local fair in Connecticut. Not always county fairs, but very similar.)
Here is the WHY!
There are many reasons why people might enjoy going to a county fair! Some popular attractions at county fairs include:
- Agricultural exhibits: Many county fairs feature displays of fresh fruits, vegetables, grains, and other agricultural products grown locally. Visitors can learn about different farming techniques, see demonstrations, and sample fresh produce.
- Animal exhibits: County fairs often showcase livestock such as cows, pigs, sheep, chickens, and horses. Visitors can watch animal shows, learn about breeding and care practices, and sometimes even pet or feed the animals.
- Food and drink: Fairgoers can indulge in traditional fair foods like cotton candy, funnel cakes, corn dogs, and snow cones. Many vendors also offer specialty items like artisanal cheeses, smoked meats, and local wines.
- Arts and crafts: County fairs provide an opportunity for local artisans to display their wares, including handmade jewelry, pottery, woodworking, and textiles. Visitors can browse vendor booths and purchase unique gifts or souvenirs.
- Live entertainment: Fairs often feature live music performances, dance troupes, comedy acts, and other forms of entertainment. Visitors can enjoy concerts, magic shows, acrobatic performances, and more.
- Carnival rides and games: For thrill-seekers, county fairs usually offer carnival rides like roller coasters, Ferris wheels, and bumper cars. There are also games of skill, where visitors can test their abilities and win prizes.
- Community events: County fairs serve as important community gathering spaces, hosting events like pie-eating contests, tractor parades, dog agility competitions, and 4-H club exhibits. These activities foster a sense of camaraderie among locals and promote agricultural education.
- Shopping: In addition to arts and crafts vendors, county fairs may have commercial vendors selling items like clothing, home goods, and outdoor equipment. Visitors can find unique items and take advantage of special promotions.
- Education: Many county fairs host educational workshops, seminars, and demonstrations on topics related to agriculture, sustainability, and healthy living. Attendees can learn about beekeeping, composting, gardening, and other practical skills.
- Family fun: Above all, county fairs offer a fun and festive atmosphere for families to spend time together. Parents and children can enjoy the various attractions, shows, and activities, creating lasting memories.
