Relative excerpts from the interview:

Chris: Michael, I’d like to share a personal story to highlight the importance of carbon monoxide detectors. My family recently had a scare when my father-in-law’s house was leaking carbon monoxide. They didn’t have a CO detector, but they noticed the issue because it was also emitting exhaust. The fire crew said there was no reason they should have made it out alive, but they did—thanks to my daughter, who smelled something off and alerted everyone. They all rushed out and went to the hospital for treatment.

Michael Cassidy: That’s a terrifying experience, Chris. Carbon monoxide is colorless and odorless, so without a detector, you wouldn’t know it’s there. In Massachusetts, detectors have been required since 2006, but enforcement only happens during property sales or transfers. Nearly 20 years later, we still find homes without detectors, just like your father-in-law’s.”

Chris: Michael, how do you balance your responsibilities as a fire chief and broadcast host?

Michael Cassidy: The studio is very judicious with their time. We record multiple episodes in one session, then they handle post-production and release one episode a month. This efficient use of time is essential since setting up the equipment and ensuring the ambulance isn’t needed during recording is quite a task. Additionally, we’ve donated all the books used in the episodes to the local library, creating a curated “Storytime with Chief Cassidy” fire safety series. This helps extend our message beyond the broadcasts.

Chris: That’s a great initiative. It reminds me of a nonprofit I worked with; they streamlined their processes to make user experiences more straightforward. Your approach to using the library and recording multiple episodes at once seems similarly effective.

Michael Cassidy: Absolutely. The collaboration with the cable studio has been fantastic. Most recordings are done by the station manager, but occasionally, he brings interns, providing them with practical learning experiences. This multi-layered approach benefits both our fire safety education and the studio’s training process.

Chris: It’s impressive how you manage to fulfill both roles so effectively. Your efforts in marketing and outreach are clearly part of your evolving responsibilities as chief.

Michael Cassidy: Yes, marketing our organization and initiatives is a crucial part of my job. Whether it’s through YouTube, conferences, or other platforms, getting our message out to a broader audience is essential. Balancing these duties is challenging but necessary.”

Chris LaFreniere

Chris LaFreniere

From an early age, Chris LaFreniere became interested in the written word, as well as finding his voice. He was quite regularly told by teachers, both in a positive way as well as a negative way, that his style of writing was akin to the way he thought. In one encounter with a teacher, she advised him that he should go into journalism because she believed he would do well.

Chris has been writing for close to a decade now, starting off as simply a way to get his views and opinions out via a blog, which over time has morphed into a more polished style as well as a new arena. One of which some individuals have referred to as “citizen journalism.” Writing is a passion for Chris and a place where he truly believes he’s found his voice. He also presently works as a copywriter.
