Why I Had Gabe on the Podcast

Game System

Game System

The reason for having Gabe D. on my podcast was straightforward. While working in the resell field, I developed a good working relationship with Gabe. Gabe became a person of interest to my business due to his exceptional technical skills in fixing game systems—skills I did not possess. His expertise allowed him to repair several systems and significantly contributed to my business by providing a decent return on investment. Gabe worked for another individual with whom I frequently interacted, given the nature of my resell business. Beyond his technical proficiency, Gabe was always pleasant to deal with, making our interactions both professional and enjoyable.

Having him on the podcast provided an opportunity to delve into his unique skill set and share his valuable insights with our audience. Gabe’s ability to solve complex technical problems and his approachable demeanor made for a compelling conversation. His contributions to my business and our shared experiences in the resell field offered a rich topic for discussion, making him an ideal guest. By featuring Gabe, I aimed to highlight the importance of technical expertise in business success and share the story of a remarkable individual who played a pivotal role in my entrepreneurial journey.

Excerpts from the podcast:

Host: “I don’t know your perspective on our connection, but you’re welcome to share.”

Gabe: “I remember meeting you a few years ago at Lady Moe’s Attic Treasures, where I was Larry LeBlanc’s gaming technician. Sadly, Larry passed away about a year ago. He was a great man. I can’t recall the exact system you wanted me to repair—probably a PlayStation 2. My first impression of you was interesting. I can’t remember if it was you or someone else wanting to work with Larry, but my memory is a bit fuzzy on that.”

Host: “Larry and I had a good working relationship. He knew how to make deals and wasn’t afraid to lose a few bucks. If he listed something for $45, I’d sometimes get it for $40 or $42 because we’d haggle. I realized you could help me get things I couldn’t previously.”

Gabe: “Larry was generous with deals. He had a vintage Samsung gaming TV he wanted over $100 for, but no one was interested. When I approached him, he sold it to me for $60. I still have that TV today. Larry’s passing shocked many people, even months later. They still ask about him, and it’s always a great sadness.”
____

Host: “Let’s jump right into the questions. Can you share some insights into your repair process and how you approach fixing vintage electronics? What sets your repair services apart from others in the market?”

Gabe: “When it comes to gaming systems, I approach each one by assessing its condition, functionality, and potential issues. Each system is different, especially depending on its sophistication. There are some repairs I can’t do immediately due to a lack of certain tools. For instance, if someone brought in a PlayStation 3 with the yellow light of death or an Xbox 360 with the red ring of death, I’d have to turn them away. The necessary tool for those repairs costs over a thousand dollars, and I don’t have the space for it right now.”

Host: “Right, if the end doesn’t justify the means, then it’s not worth it.”

Gabe: “Exactly. I do have a diagnostic tool for the PlayStation 3, but it only provides repair logs and diagnostics—it doesn’t help me repair the system. I can diagnose down to the motherboard, but that’s not really repairing it. For other systems, I can often repair or modify them. It usually boils down to identifying the problem and whether I can replicate it. Sometimes customers’ descriptions don’t match the actual issue. I have to go through everything step by step because most customers aren’t experts at gaming repairs. Some think they can fix it themselves, but when they can’t, it costs more to repair because their attempts often make things worse.”

Host: “Right, they screw something up, and then you have to fix it, which ends up costing more.”

Chris LaFreniere

Chris LaFreniere

From an early age, Chris LaFreniere became interested in the written word, as well as finding his voice. He was quite regularly told by teachers, both in a positive way as well as a negative way, that his style of writing was akin to the way he thought. In one encounter with a teacher, she advised him that he should go into journalism because she believed he would do well.

Chris has been writing for close to a decade now, starting off as simply a way to get his views and opinions out via a blog, which over time has morphed into a more polished style as well as a new arena. One of which some individuals have referred to as “citizen journalism.” Writing is a passion for Chris and a place where he truly believes he’s found his voice. He also presently works as a copywriter.
