How to Observe Valentine’s Day

Celebrate the day by giving valentines to your loved ones. You could buy some from the store, as is the norm, but writing them by hand will give them more meaning. If you have a significant other, make plans to spend the day with them. Do some of your favorite things together, or try something new. If you are single, there are still plenty of ways to celebrate the day. No matter if you are single or not, there are some films and songs perfectly meant for the day that can be enjoyed by everyone.

More On The Day

Valentine’s Day, celebrated on February 14th, is a day dedicated to expressing love and affection between intimate partners, friends, and family members. The origins of Valentine’s Day can be traced back to both Christian and Roman traditions. It is named after St. Valentine, a Christian martyr, though the specific details of his life and deeds are somewhat shrouded in mystery. One popular legend suggests that St. Valentine was a priest who defied Emperor Claudius II’s ban on marriage for soldiers, secretly officiating weddings for young lovers.

As time passed, Valentine’s Day evolved into a more secular celebration of romance. In the 14th and 15th centuries, the holiday gained popularity in England and France, where it became associated with courtly love and chivalric traditions. The earliest surviving Valentine, a poem written by Charles, Duke of Orleans, to his wife while he was imprisoned in the Tower of London, dates back to 1415.

In contemporary times, Valentine’s Day is celebrated worldwide, with people exchanging cards, flowers, chocolates, and other tokens of affection. The iconic symbol of the holiday is the heart, often depicted in red or pink. Cupid, the Roman god of love, is another prominent figure associated with Valentine’s Day, often shown as a cherubic archer whose arrows cause people to fall in love.

While some criticize Valentine’s Day for its commercialization, it remains a cherished occasion for many to celebrate their relationships and express their love. Acts of kindness and appreciation, whether through grand gestures or simple expressions of affection, help strengthen bonds and create lasting memories. Beyond romantic love, Valentine’s Day also offers an opportunity to show love and gratitude to friends, family, and even oneself, reminding us of the importance of love in all its forms.

Be the change you want to see in the world.
