Reasons for having David A. Edmond on the podcast:
David Allen Edmonds Author and former Teacher
When I was searching for authors to feature on my podcast, I came across David Allen Edmond’s on Alignable. Timing is everything, and with the holidays approaching, we both had plenty on our plates, so we set a date for after the festivities settled. From the moment we got things rolling, it was clear David had a lifetime of stories to share. Our conversation may have been succinct, but it was packed with depth, heart, and a firsthand look into the life of someone who spent years shaping young minds in education—before transitioning into a full-time career as an author.
Beyond his years in the classroom, David’s passion for storytelling shines through in his work. Growing up with a journalist for a father and a writer for a mother, it’s no surprise that crafting narratives became second nature to him. Now, as an author, he brings those lived experiences into his books, creating compelling stories that resonate with readers. Our conversation highlighted not just his journey from educator to writer, but also the enduring impact of great storytelling in all walks of life.

Chris (Host): So, David, your teaching career not only shaped young minds but also kept you out of the Vietnam War.
Looking back, how do you think that pivotal moment influenced the trajectory of your life—both as an educator and as a writer?
David Allen Edmonds (Guest): Oh, it had a huge impact on my life.
I was a senior in college in 1970. Sometime in the spring, I signed a teaching contract, and then about a month later, they started pulling draft numbers.
That was not a good night.
My roommate—who, if he’d gotten a low number, would have run to Canada—ended up with 364. So, he wasn’t going anywhere. I, on the other hand, got number 88.
Which meant I was definitely getting drafted.
That summer, I was thinking about getting married—not that I was, but the thought was there. Meanwhile, the summer passed, and I was called up for my draft physical. I passed.
Then, I started teaching because the school year had already begun.
Indirect Objects by David Allen Edmonds
Sometime in the fall, I got called in. They told me, “Hey, we understand you want a deferment.”
I said, “Yes, I do.”
They said, “Well, we don’t give deferments anymore. And you’re number 88, so you’re ready to go.”
I said, “Well, you did give deferments when I signed my contract in the spring.”
They basically shrugged and said, “Well, nothing we can do about that now. Have a nice day.”
So, I left that meeting not knowing where I’d be the next month.
Then, a couple of weeks later, I got a letter in the mail—somehow, I did get a deferment.
To this day, I have no idea how that happened. It was too late to apply for one, but somehow, there it was.

Chris LaFreniere
From an early age, Chris LaFreniere became interested in the written word, as well as finding his voice. He was quite regularly told by teachers, both in a positive way as well as a negative way, that his style of writing was akin to the way he thought. In one encounter with a teacher, she advised him that he should go into journalism because she believed he would do well.
Chris has been writing for close to a decade now, starting off as simply a way to get his views and opinions out via a blog, which over time has morphed into a more polished style as well as a new arena. One of which some individuals have referred to as “citizen journalism.” Writing is a passion for Chris and a place where he truly believes he’s found his voice. He also presently works as a copywriter.
