Whether you’re seeking a peaceful day in nature, a walk down memory lane, or a spot for outdoor activities, Rocky Point State Park is the place to be.
A Brief History of Rocky Point State Park
Rocky Point State Park’s history dates back to the late 1800s when it was originally established as an amusement park. Over the decades, the park became one of Rhode Island’s most popular destinations, attracting visitors with its carnival rides, boardwalk, and beach. The park featured everything from a carousel and roller coaster to dance halls, making it a hub of family entertainment for many years. However, after years of decline, the amusement park closed in 1995.
In 2007, the state of Rhode Island acquired the property and in 2014 transformed it into Rocky Point State Park, preserving the land for future generations to enjoy. Today, while much of the amusement park has been dismantled, visitors can still catch glimpses of the past through the park’s historic remnants, including the old boardwalk and various structures.
A Park Full of Natural Beauty
Spanning over 400 acres, Rocky Point State Park offers a wide variety of outdoor experiences, making it a wonderful destination for nature lovers. The park’s location along the Narragansett Bay provides beautiful waterfront views, ideal for relaxing, picnicking, or taking in a spectacular sunset. Two of the park’s highlights are the historic boardwalk that extends over the water and its small beach area, which, though modest, provides a tranquil spot for swimming or sunbathing.
Traces of the Amusement Park
Remnants of the past – one of the signs marking a spot where adventure once thrived at the old amusement park.
While the rides and attractions of the old Rocky Point Amusement Park are long gone, several remnants still remain, adding a touch of nostalgia to the park. One of the most iconic pieces of the park’s history is the Rocky Point Arch, once from the 1964 World’s Fair and once marked the entrance to the amusement park. This archway still stands today as a reminder of the park’s vibrant past, and it’s a popular spot for photos and a poignant symbol of the many memories the park holds.
In addition to the arch, visitors can find the foundations of the old roller coaster, the beach pavilion, the salt water pool, stanchions for the skyride, the tower from the swing, and the outlines of the former boardwalk that ran along the shoreline. If you venture up into the woods, you’ll discover a few more hidden treasures, including pieces of the old train tracks, the mysterious caves known as Rocky Chasm, and abandoned water tanks that add to the park’s historic charm. These pieces of history create a fascinating glimpse into the amusement park’s golden days, and they help give the park its unique character.
