Sea Shell Treasures of the deep-Keyes Beach

Tucked along the southern shores of Cape Cod, Hyannis is the kind of place that blends classic New England charm with beach-town relaxation and a hint of history around every corner. Known as the “heart of Cape Cod,” Hyannis is more than just a stop on the way to Martha’s Vineyard or Nantucket—it’s a destination in its own right. Whether you’re sipping clam chowder by the harbor, basking in the sun at Keyes Beach, or wandering the JFK Museum, this vibrant coastal village offers something for every kind of traveler. Add in the convenience and comfort of staying in a private VRBO rental, and you’ve got the recipe for an unforgettable getaway.

Even better? Visit in the off-season to skip the crowds and see the Cape in a whole new light. From family vacations to couples’ escapes, Hyannis promises fun, flavor, and that laid-back Cape Cod magic all year round.

My wife loves the beach. Loves the ocean. (I grew up on the shore.) My grandson Jacob had just turned 18. I had lots of points on my VRBO account. And I wanted seafood! (My wife and I spent our honeymoon in Cape Cod in 1992.)

I did some VRBO research and found a place that would meet our needs. A couple of bedrooms, looking out over the ocean, and less than a minute to the beach and the ocean. I booked it. (If you want to save money, check out the VRBO below and get a Wells Fargo One card.)

The night before, we were all packed but the food. Jacob was up and excited to go by 8.

We headed out about 8:30. Stopping at Panera’s for coffee we were on the road. We hit the Sagamore Bridge about 11:30 or so. Heading down 6, we got off and decided to grab some lunch. We wanted to go to the Olympia but the road was closed for repairs. So we made it easy. 99’s in Yarmouth. And we had a great waitress named Jenny. (And even though we had a struggle on our Upside discount, she took it in stride, never losing her smile.) She gave us some great recommendations for beaches and such.

Following lunch we went down to the beach and took a walk. (Less than a half mile to the Kennedy Compound!) Our check-in was at 3. We got there. Such a great property. Off season. Middle of the week. Amazing!

So, what do you do?

Things to Do in Hyannis

Seafood at the Hearth and Kettle

Seafood at the Hearth and Kettle

Hyannis is bustling with activities that cater to a wide range of interests. Whether you’re a history buff, a beachgoer, a food lover, or someone simply looking to unwind, there’s no shortage of things to keep you entertained.

We thought we would do more. We crashed. At 4 AM, we were awakened by a thunderstorm with lightning strikes seconds away.  We awoke.  As the sun dried the deck I went out with coffee in hand and just sucked up the rays. Jacob was up at 6. We spent time on the beach. Jacob picked through rocks, shells, and seaweed.

You can see a number of our pictures from our trip on Facebook.

That afternoon we wanted to try a restaurant in Yarmouth. (I got to drive by a friend’s jewelry store, The Silver Unicorn. I have known Steve for years.) More road construction. We drove by the Hearth and Kettle Plaza. Wait! What? I read an article years ago that said they were closing their restaurants. We turned around and headed in. Yep! They were open. We went in.

We ended up ordering seafood platters and Jacob had a seafood “casserole” with shrimp, scrod, and scallops! Awesome! A little history revisited. (I reminded my daughter of the time we met my brother and they order Key Lime. I sang Coconut by Harry Nielsen! (And embarassed her and my nieces!)

“Brudder bought a coconut, he bought it for a dime
His sister had anudder one, she paid it for de lime
She put de lime in de coconut, she drank ’em bot’ up
She put de lime in de coconut, she drank ’em bot’ up
She put de lime in de coconut, she drank ’em bot’ up
She put de lime in de coconut, she called de doctor, woke ‘im up

And said, “Doctor, ain’t there nothin’ I can take?”
I said, “Doctor, to relieve this bellyache?”

We left there with Strawberry Shortcake and Cheeses Cake for later on.  We got back to the condo and decided to walk off some of the lunch on the beach. Picking up the chairs, we headed down to sit on the beach for the afternoon. Jacob wandered around seeking sea glass, shells, and rocks.

After a while we headed back. Jacob and Tina played games and I crashed. I called my daughter and we talked about a trip there after she returned from Europe.

What else is there to do?

Walk Down Main Street

Main Street in Hyannis is a lively stretch packed with local boutiques, art galleries, ice cream parlors, and cafés. It’s ideal for a leisurely stroll, and you can easily spend an afternoon hopping from one locally owned shop to the next. Street musicians and seasonal festivals often add to the fun, giving Main Street a small-town vibrancy that’s impossible to resist.

We drove by there a few times but many places are closed before the season really opens up.

Tour the John F. Kennedy Hyannis Museum

Hyannis was a beloved summer destination for President John F. Kennedy and his family, and the JFK Hyannis Museum honors that legacy. With captivating exhibits, personal photographs, and videos, the museum provides a deeper look at JFK’s life and his strong connection to Cape Cod. It’s a must-visit for anyone interested in American history or local heritage.

We did not make it there but it is on our list for the next visit.  I spent time talking to Jacob about the history of the compound and the Kennedys on Cape Cod!

Explore Hyannis Harbor

The harbor is not just scenic—it’s active. Ferries bound for Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket depart from here, and you’ll often spot fishing boats, sailboats, and sightseeing tours navigating the waters. Enjoy a waterfront meal, take a harbor cruise, or just sit back and watch the maritime scene unfold.

Nothing is cooler than seeing all the bright colored boats against blue skies and shimmering waters.

Ride the Cape Cod Central Railroad

For a unique perspective on the area, hop on the Cape Cod Central Railroad. With options ranging from daytime scenic rides to romantic dinner trains, this vintage rail line provides a charming way to see the Cape’s natural beauty.

Dining in Hyannis: Where to Eat

From seaside shacks serving fried clams to upscale bistros offering gourmet fare, Hyannis has a little bit of everything for your palate.

  • The Naked Oyster Bistro & Raw Bar – This upscale spot serves locally sourced oysters, creative seafood dishes, and a curated wine list. It’s ideal for a date night or a sophisticated meal.
  • Alberto’s Ristorante – A long-time favorite on Main Street, Alberto’s offers authentic Italian cuisine in a refined setting. Don’t skip the homemade pasta or the wine pairings.
  • Brazilian Grill – A meat lover’s paradise, this restaurant serves endless skewers of grilled meats rodizio-style. It’s lively, filling, and a great group experience.
  • The Black Cat Tavern – Located near the harbor, this casual eatery is a favorite for lunch or dinner. With lobster rolls, chowder, and a breezy patio, it captures the spirit of Cape Cod dining.
  • The West End – A trendy, modern restaurant that focuses on sustainable ingredients, artful cocktails, and creative entrees. It’s perfect for foodies and those looking for an elevated meal experience.

While we did not visit any of these, The Black Cat Tavern is a fave!

Spend a Day at Keyes Memorial Beach

Jacob at Keyes Beach

Also known as Sea Street Beach, Keyes Memorial Beach is a quieter alternative to some of Cape Cod’s more crowded shores. This sandy stretch is great for families thanks to its gentle waves and lifeguards during the summer months. Amenities include picnic tables, volleyball courts, restrooms, and even a snack bar during peak season. It’s a great place to kick back with a book, build sandcastles, or just enjoy the sun.

Our place was just a few hundred feet from the beach!

I mentioned using VRBO to find our place.

Why Use VRBO for Your Stay

When it comes to accommodations, VRBO (Vacation Rentals by Owner) offers significant advantages over traditional hotels. In Hyannis, you’ll find an array of charming cottages, beachfront condos, and spacious family homes available for short-term rental.

Benefits of VRBO in Hyannis:

  • Space and privacy: Perfect for families or groups, with separate bedrooms, living areas, and sometimes even yards or pools.
  • Full kitchens: Save money by cooking a few meals at home or packing beach picnics.
  • Local experience: Many rentals reflect Cape Cod’s character and charm, adding authenticity to your stay.
  • Pet-friendly options: Many VRBO listings welcome dogs, which is great if you’re traveling with a four-legged friend.

Booking a VRBO allows you to create a custom experience—whether you’re planning a romantic retreat or a family vacation, you’ll find something that suits your needs.

The Magic of the Off-Season

While summer is undeniably beautiful in Hyannis, the off-season—particularly fall—offers a quieter, equally magical experience. The weather stays mild well into October, and the fall foliage adds an extra layer of beauty to your surroundings. Restaurants and shops remain open, but without the summer crowds, you can explore at your own pace.

Why Go Off-Season?

  • Better rates: Lodging, including VRBO rentals, is often significantly cheaper.
  • More availability: Popular spots aren’t booked out months in advance.
  • Local events: Enjoy fall festivals, cranberry harvests, and seasonal seafood offerings.
  • Peaceful atmosphere: Take long, quiet walks on the beach or enjoy early morning coffee without the bustle.

Making the Most of Your Stay

To ensure you have a fulfilling visit, here are a few tips:

  • Bring layers: Cape Cod weather can be unpredictable, especially outside summer.
  • Book ferries in advance: If you plan to visit the islands, secure your ferry tickets early.
  • Bike the Cape Cod Rail Trail: Rent bikes and enjoy this scenic, car-free route.
  • Pack beach gear: Even in the off-season, a sunny beach day can sneak up on you.
  • Check local calendars: From food truck festivals to live music, there’s always something going on.

We had a great time. And we will do it again. We have restaurants to visit, museums to work through, and salt air to inhale.

Hyannis isn’t just a place—it’s a feeling. It’s that salty breeze off the harbor, the buttery lobster roll in your hand, and the easy pace of a town that knows how to relax. Whether you’re coming for the beaches, the food, the history, or simply the joy of slowing down, Hyannis delivers on every front. And with the flexibility of a VRBO rental, you can experience the best of the Cape with the comforts of home.

So why wait for summer? Pack your bags, head to Hyannis, and let Cape Cod’s charm carry you away—any time of year.
