My grandson, Jacob and I had errands to do. Banking, refill propane for our grill and buy a present for his sister’s 16th birthday this weekend. But, I had another place in mind.

“Where are we going?” he asked, as we headed down Park Street. I told him I was checking out the Pit Stop BBQ open today.

It was a gorgeous day, with beautiful white clouds in a blue sky. I pulled up, seeing my friend, Dennis, one of the owners. We talked for a moment and I said we would back in a little bit.

I have known Dennis and Marri, for many years. They originally began as the Pit Stop BBQ in Westmoreland New Hampshire. There were many trips there with friends and family. A few years ago, they moved to the food truck, and were in Keene New Hampshire. {{more}}

Jacob and I came home, emptying the van. I had a few things to do and they we headed out. Our first stop was an ATM. (The Pit Stop is currently a “cash only” place, though we had a discussion about adding a card option.)

Jacob and I pulled up in the parking area (free) and there were already people eating out at the shaded table area. We went over and viewed the menu. A good selection. Jacob ordered a Smokin Bone Wrap and I ordered a Pit Burger. Our orders were cheerfully taken, including sauces, side options and drinks. I handed over the cash and stood over to the side. Others had begun to show up and each received great service.

The current location is reasonably quiet in terms of noise. They have set up 3 good size tables behind the truck in a nice little area. Plenty of parking and close to town. (Perhaps 5 minutes out of downtown.) While we were waiting, Jacob and I talked about the smoking smoker and the aroma of the smoke in the air.

I am BBQ kind of guy. When they first opened in the restaurant, I was there for everything from pizzas, ribs and more. Smoked foods? Love them. Because of a number of circumstances, not related to them, they had to close that location. Seeing them reopen in Keene last year, was a great moment for me.

My recent decision to visit food trucks in my area, always reminds me of my younger days in big cities, finding foods in the carts and trucks of the streets. In my youth, many of the places were hot dogs and sandwiches. Not anymore. You can buy anything today. (I recently visited Hot Hogs BBQ, Street Savory, and Salt & Lime. )

Our food was ready. And did it look good! Grabbing the napkins, we headed out to one of the shaded picnic tables. I got in a few pictures and began eating.

Jacob had ordered the wrap, along with a sided of pasta salad that had black beans in it and was great. (Orders also include a bag of chips.) He had ordered the pork wrap and a medium sauce. It has cheese, chili and refried beans. (The sauce on his face, told the story!) He said it was great and my bite of it, agreed.

My order was the burger and I had asked for the coleslaw. The burger is local, grass fed beef. It has pulled pork (smoked on site) and cheese, and lettuce, tomato and onions, and the sauce. (I asked for the Carolina sauce.) Every bite was tasty and juicy. I love that they cut up the LTO in small pieces, releasing more flavor and texture. The sauce was just right. One of my favorite sides is the tasty coleslaw that accompanied the burger.

While we were finishing up, Dennis came over and sat with us. We talked food, cars (I see him at a lot of car shows and the name of the business has a food meaning and NASCAR meaning.), and life. Marri came over and brought us a few bites of the smoked sausage. Nice smoke rings and excellent taste. I am going to have to try the sausage, pepper and onion sandwich sometime soon, because the sausage was so good.

Dennis’ sister came over to say she had rescued the cornbread while he was talking to us.

Their site has information on what the meats are and how they are cooked, prepared, etc., You can also find information on their catering services. They have rented the building where they are located, and when the snow flies, they will move operations inside.

A satisfying trip. I encouraged them to get Square and take cards and pump up their Facebook posts. I share some of their catering info.

I have hit all the trucks in Keene and will be on the road to see a few in the area. The trip has been fun so far. My hope is someone, somewhere, across this great country will be interested in doing this somewhere else and keeping the ball rolling here. If you are a budding food writer (Or maybe you have another passion.) I hope you will let us know.

(I would love to get your food truck reviews from other areas.)
