Today is…Daughter’s Day
Celebrating daughters, this holiday has a special significance in India, the country where it was started. It was founded by Archies Limited, who wanted fellow Indians to have pride in their daughters and to express their love for them. The idea for the day was born out of India’s gender imbalance, and the lack of respect that daughters there have often felt. The preference for sons over daughters that inspired the day hasn’t only been an issue in India. Because of this issue, the holiday aims to show the importance of daughters. After taking root in India, the holiday has spread and is now celebrated around the world. Various other “daughter days” have been celebrated on different dates in many countries around the world, although this day, taking place on the third Sunday of September, appears to be the most prevalent.
