Would one expect to see totem poles in Kansas? There are three around the roads near Lyle Morgan’s farm on the west edge of Smith Center. What came from a thought about a pole on the intersection near Smith County Veterinary Clinic on the ‘Old Highway’, eventually was put into action. It sort of perks up the ‘neighborhood’ as people drive by. Lyle made them, attaching them to poles that are there. “Pictures of them made the rounds on Facebook,” Lyle said. {{more}}
Totems are found in the Pacific Northwest. The art is called Tlingit, pronounced, tlink it. The subjects are the animals in that area, and the lines are thick and thin. Black is the primary color, formline is the term used for the outline of the subject.
Harmony Hoss is an artist who sells her Tlingit art drawings in Seattle, Washington at Pike Place Market.
The real totems tell a story. Each figure represents a part of a story. Totems are used to record history and legends of the tribes.
Sharon Black is from Smith Center, Kansas. We welcome her to our team of volunteers.
Sharon Black has been writing for many years including newspapers, short stories, and as a publisher. She was born in Nebraska and has lived in Kansas most of her life. In her hometown of Smith Center, Kansas, Willa Cather’s hometown is to the north and Bob Dole’s hometown is to the south. Sharon is a press release writer for the National Parks Arts Foundation, and writes for b U n e k e magazine. The biggest project she has accomplished is co-writer of the TV movie Home on the Range. The movie is about the song, which is the state song of Kansas and the lawsuit surrounding it in the 1930s, and finding the rightful author of the song. Sharon is distantly related to the Mississippi writer Eudora Welty.
