If you are by the shoreline of Connecticut looking for an all-season hiking or running spot, Bluffs Point in Groton just might be your next favorite destination. The Point is a nature preserve with walking trails, overlooks, beaches, marshes, steep cliffs, forest and wetlands, with views of Long Island Sound and Fishers Island. The trail is about 3.6 miles, and takes typically 1.5- 2 hours to complete. Parking is free. Picnicking is easy as there are charcoal grills located on the property at the beginning of the trail. A variety of native wildflowers, some of approximately 200 bird species, and deer may be seen as you walk. Along the way you may even spy historic ruins back in the woods. {{more}}
The main trail is well maintained, wide and kid friendly; there is a bathroom at the beginning of the trail, and a second one half way through, with a water fountain for refilling dog bowls. Hikers can push a strong stroller fairly easily, and during high tide there is usually a way around the mud. There are offshoot trails to wander and explore in every skill level, and while they may be a bit populated, they are not overcrowded. Dogs are allowed on leashes, and the trails are also shared occasionally with horses, but because the trails are wide, there is no problem with space.
Bluffs Point is certainly a place you can come back to and enjoy other activities, including picnicking, swimming, mountain biking, saltwater fishing, crabbing, shell fishing, and kayaking. A ramp for car-top boats is available. The fish most popular at Bluffs Point are striped bass, sea trout, bluefish and summer flounder.
The views along the trail and especially at the end are worth the walk. While the best time of the year is between April through August for hiking, if you are looking to be out in the middle of natures beauty during the peak of autumn foliage, this trail is ideal. Winter hiking is also stunning with the scenery covered in snow.
With sandy beaches, large rocks to climb on, and waves crashing around you, this location is fantastic for photo taking, or just getting away from the stresses of life for a little bit.
