More on the day

Epiphany, celebrated on January 6th, is a Christian holiday that commemorates the revelation of Jesus Christ as the Son of God to the Gentiles, represented by the visit of the Magi or Wise Men. Also known as Twelfth Night, the holiday marks the culmination of the Twelve Days of Christmas.

The biblical narrative of Epiphany is found in the Gospel of Matthew, where the Magi, guided by a star, follow it to Bethlehem to worship the newborn Jesus. They bring gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh, symbolizing Jesus’ kingship, divinity, and eventual sacrifice.

Epiphany holds significant cultural and religious importance across various Christian traditions. In Western Christianity, it is associated with the adoration of the Magi and the manifestation of Christ’s divinity. In Eastern Christianity, especially in the Eastern Orthodox Church, Epiphany is often linked to the baptism of Jesus in the Jordan River, symbolizing the manifestation of the Holy Trinity.

The celebration of Epiphany varies in customs and traditions. In many cultures, the day is marked by church services, processions, and the blessing of water to symbolize purification. The Twelfth Night also signifies the end of the Christmas season, with some cultures engaging in festive gatherings, feasts, and the removal of Christmas decorations.

In countries like Spain and some Latin American nations, Epiphany is known as Three Kings’ Day. Families often exchange gifts on this day, mirroring the Magi’s act of presenting gifts to the infant Jesus. Additionally, it is common to partake in a special cake known as “Rosca de Reyes,” containing a hidden figurine representing the baby Jesus.

Epiphany carries a rich cultural and spiritual significance, emphasizing the universal revelation of Christ’s divine nature. Whether observed with solemn religious services or joyful festivities, Epiphany serves as a reminder of the profound impact of Jesus’ life and the welcoming of God’s light into the world.

Be the change you want to see in the world.
