Why Did I choose to interview Barbara:

Barbara Bernier Crocker

Barbara Bernier Crocker

Having Barbara Bernier Crocker as the inaugural author on “Coffee on the Couch” was a deliberate and exciting decision, setting the tone for a series of engaging author interviews. Before Barbara, the podcast had yet to feature an author, and her episode marked a significant milestone. The choice to bring Barbara on board was motivated by the desire to diversify the guest lineup and explore the unique experiences and approaches authors bring to their craft. Barbara’s insights and writing approach proved to be refreshing and informative during our conversation. What made this interview particularly special was the personal connection through her sister, a regular attendee at my church. Barbara’s episode not only added a new dimension to the podcast but also paved the way for subsequent author interviews. As the series unfolds, I look forward to more enriching conversations with authors who, like Barbara, bring a wealth of diverse perspectives and stories to share with our audience.

Host: As a new author with a passion for medical mysteries and local lore, could you share what initially sparked your fascination with these themes and how they influence your writing?

Barbara: Well, I have always been a lover of detective shows since I was little, and I used to read the whole series of the Nancy Drew books. And I also have a curiosity with the 19th century and how things were done, and how people lived.

It’s just something I’ve always been interested in.Yeah, after seeing the school and the grounds, it really fascinated me.And he then showed me the local cemetery. And there were headstones from some of the girls that had perished at the Stevens School.

Host: It always makes me curious, because to sit down and write the book and the process of how it goes and how long it must take.
I don’t remember if I asked you in the questions, but this book must have been a long process.

Barbara: It took me around three years.

Host: Oh, wow.

Barbara: Yeah. Because one facet is getting the information about the school. I wanted to use some of the real names, at least the real first names. The other facet was learning and reading about forensic anthropology. But, you know, it did take some time. I wanted to Make sure I had things correct. And yeah, this was a long process. My next book, I think once I, you know, now that I know more about forensicanthropology and I have my source books; the next book will be a lot easier to write.

Chris LaFreniere

Chris LaFreniere

From an early age, Chris LaFreniere became interested in the written word, as well as finding his voice. He was quite regularly told by teachers, both in a positive way as well as a negative way, that his style of writing was akin to the way he thought. In one encounter with a teacher, she advised him that he should go into journalism because she believed he would do well.

Chris has been writing for close to a decade now, starting off as simply a way to get his views and opinions out via a blog, which over time has morphed into a more polished style as well as a new arena. One of which some individuals have referred to as “citizen journalism.” Writing is a passion for Chris and a place where he truly believes he’s found his voice. He also presently works as a copywriter.
