Reason for having Brandyn on the podcast:

When I first heard about Brandyn through our mutual contact at Fight Coffee, I was intrigued. Anthony, someone whose judgment I deeply respect, vouched for him, and that was all the encouragement I needed to reach out. What followed was a bit of a logistical adventure—navigating conflicting schedules and tackling some pesky tech issues—but persistence paid off. Once the recording was underway, it was clear Brandyn was a guest worth the effort.

Our conversation touched on the unique wisdom that comes with age, especially for those navigating the challenges of martial arts and physical contact sports. Brandyn offered insights that were both reflective and grounded, showcasing how the lessons learned through grit, discipline, and perseverance shape a person’s perspective. It was a candid, engaging dialogue that reminded me why conversations like these are so meaningful.

Chris:
Welcome, Brandyn.

Brandyn:
Hey, how you doing?

Chris:
Not too bad! So, a quick note on how we got connected—it was through Alignable. I forget exactly what I was searching for, but…

Chris:
Yeah, I think it was through Anthony from Fight Coffee.

Brandyn:
That’s right! I saw his profile, and I drink his coffee too. I love it.

chris:
Same here. I’m actually an affiliate with Fight Coffee. Anthony and I talk here and there.

Chris:
Yeah, once I saw that connection, I thought, “If Anthony trusts him, then I trust him.” So, I reached out, and now here we are.

Brandyn:
Exactly. And I’m glad we made it happen.

Chris:
Brandyn, your entry into MMA is fresh, and you’re already making waves—not just as a fighter, but as a coach and manager. What initially sparked your passion for martial arts, and how did that lead you to step into the world of MMA?

Brandyn:
So, I mean, I started really young. I began wrestling when I was about eight years old. You know, it’s a story similar to a lot of people’s—I was a smaller kid, had a bit of a lisp, and got picked on. I was also a big pro wrestling fan, so my parents put me into the wrestling program at my elementary school.

And I just liked it. It was something I enjoyed and was naturally good at. Even as a kid, I felt like I understood it on a different level. So, I stuck with it all the way through school.

But once school ended, there weren’t really any wrestling programs available—at least not back then. This was about 15 years ago now. So, I found a local gym that was doing MMA.

I trained there for a while and even had a couple of local unsanctioned fights. I did okay, but I took a loss—and I didn’t take that loss well. I ended up taking some time off.

Then, when I moved to Florida, I started working a lot…

Chris LaFreniere

Chris LaFreniere

From an early age, Chris LaFreniere became interested in the written word, as well as finding his voice. He was quite regularly told by teachers, both in a positive way as well as a negative way, that his style of writing was akin to the way he thought. In one encounter with a teacher, she advised him that he should go into journalism because she believed he would do well.

Chris has been writing for close to a decade now, starting off as simply a way to get his views and opinions out via a blog, which over time has morphed into a more polished style as well as a new arena. One of which some individuals have referred to as “citizen journalism.” Writing is a passion for Chris and a place where he truly believes he’s found his voice. He also presently works as a copywriter.
