Kaily Keyes Books

I had Kaily on the podcast because of my long-standing friendship with her mother, who was an early guest on the show. This connection naturally led me to Kaily, whose journey as an author intrigued me from the start. The conversation was very succinct and matter-of-fact, which added an engaging directness to the interview. As someone who loves to delve into the stories behind the stories, I find immense value in exploring the “why” of an author’s journey. What motivates them to become an author? What compels them to continue writing despite the challenges that come with the creative process? Kaily’s straightforward insights offered a fresh perspective that really resonated, making her episode a must-listen for anyone interested in the art of storytelling and the driving force behind an author’s passion.

Chris (The Host):

In Forgiveness That Rewards, you explore the theme of forgiveness in a deeply personal way. How did your own experiences with faith guide the development of Katharina Klint’s character?

Kaily (The Guest):
Well, when I first started writing, I didn’t really know how to develop characters or anything. So I related Katharina’s character to my own in a lot of ways—how I would respond to different things. But I was also able to enhance some of her traits, just by adding a little magic to it.

Chris (The Host):
Nice. So you can say there’s a little bit of you in the book?

Kaily (The Guest):
Yeah, there’s probably a little of me in there, yeah.

Chris (The Host):
Well, that’s neat. I was actually talking to someone not too long ago, a publisher, and we were discussing his book. He said, “You’ve navigated the bipolar world for a bit and apparently successfully. You ought to write your own book.” I told him, “Well, it’s funny you mention that because I’ve actually toyed with the idea of writing a book—more like an autobiography.” And he said, “Oh, well, that works too. Writing from your own experience is powerful.”

How has the homesteading lifestyle influenced the settings and characters in your books, particularly in Love That Counts?

Kaily (The Guest):
I think because I have experience on a homestead and a farm, and I grew up here, it naturally influenced my writing. My characters—like the family—are set on a homestead. It’s mainly because that’s what I grew up knowing, and I like writing about things I’m familiar with.

Chris LaFreniere

Chris LaFreniere

From an early age, Chris LaFreniere became interested in the written word, as well as finding his voice. He was quite regularly told by teachers, both in a positive way as well as a negative way, that his style of writing was akin to the way he thought. In one encounter with a teacher, she advised him that he should go into journalism because she believed he would do well.

Chris has been writing for close to a decade now, starting off as simply a way to get his views and opinions out via a blog, which over time has morphed into a more polished style as well as a new arena. One of which some individuals have referred to as “citizen journalism.” Writing is a passion for Chris and a place where he truly believes he’s found his voice. He also presently works as a copywriter.
