Coffee on the Couch
What was the reason for having Nadine as a guest:
Maurine Frank: Author and illustrator of children’s books
The decision to invite Maurine onto the podcast stemmed from a serendipitous encounter sparked by a Facebook post shared by one of my relatives attending a book signing event in Virginia. Upon seeing Maurine’s work showcased in the post, I felt drawn to connect with her. Our initial exchanges were promising, and we eagerly embarked on recording our episode together. However, unforeseen technical setbacks led to the need for a re-recording, as the initial upload failed to fully materialize. Despite this hiccup, Maurine’s infectious energy and engaging dialogue remained undiminished during our rescheduled interview. Our discussions not only illuminated her profound insights but also fostered a warm and collaborative rapport between us. As we anticipate future collaborations, particularly surrounding Maurine’s forthcoming book, I remain grateful for the friendly working relationship we have cultivated through our shared experiences on the podcast.
Maurine emerges as a dynamic figure whose creative journey encompasses various facets of public engagement. Although relatively new to the realm of authorship, her extensive background as a public speaker equips her with the agility to navigate discussions with spontaneity and finesse. Beyond her adept verbal skills, Maurine’s talents extend to the visual domain, where she excels in both writing and illustrating children’s books. Her preference for crafting illustrations is driven by a desire to convey her artistic vision with precision, drawing inspiration directly from her imagination. Moreover, as a children’s book author, Maurine is driven by a profound commitment to shaping a brighter future for the next generation. Through her work, she endeavors to instill in young minds a sense of empowerment and positivity, addressing societal gaps and fostering a culture of resilience and encouragement. In championing these values, Maurine aspires to pave the way for a generation imbued with the strength and optimism needed to tackle broader societal challenges.

Maurine: That’s quite a lovely introduction, and I appreciate your kind words.
I might expand on that a little bit. The world of North, I actually live in a little town called North, and it got its name because it’s on the North River and it’s a little confusing sometimes when People ask for my address. And, then I give it, and I say North, and they say North what?
Maurine: I’m like, okay, North Virginia. And then they’ll say, Northern Virginia.
And I’m like, no.
I’ve learned to now say in the town of North in Virginia, and that explains it.
Maurine: But it’s in Matthews County and we’re a rural county right on the water, and a very wonderful place to live.
Host: Now is it anything like around where I live up here where it’s kind of May-berry styled?
Maurine: Yes, probably very much so.
We do not have a stoplight in the entire county, and we don’t want one.
Stoplight means, you know, progress in big cities and traffic and people.
So yeah, we’re not going in that direction.
Maurine: I mean, they’re a fun story, both of them.
I illustrated them myself.
So I tried to make the illustrations colorful and intriguing to attract the children, but kind of underneath all that, there are some very important messages and very important purposes under both books.
Maurine: So it thrills me when they become important to the kids, because I think that’s gonna make a huge difference for them and maybe for all of us ultimately.

Chris LaFreniere
From an early age, Chris LaFreniere became interested in the written word, as well as finding his voice. He was quite regularly told by teachers, both in a positive way as well as a negative way, that his style of writing was akin to the way he thought. In one encounter with a teacher, she advised him that he should go into journalism because she believed he would do well.
Chris has been writing for close to a decade now, starting off as simply a way to get his views and opinions out via a blog, which over time has morphed into a more polished style as well as a new arena. One of which some individuals have referred to as “citizen journalism.” Writing is a passion for Chris and a place where he truly believes he’s found his voice. He also presently works as a copywriter.
