Reasoning, I had Mike on the podcast:

I had Mike J. Kizman on my podcast after he reached out through a mutual connection, Kaily Keyes, who had previously been a guest on the show. His willingness to connect and share his story caught my attention, and I was excited to dive into a conversation with him about his book and the journey he took to write it. After a brief back-and-forth, we were able to quickly lock down a recording date, and I was eager to hear more about his process, challenges, and inspirations behind his writing.

The conversation we had was engaging, offering insights into the detailed effort Mike put into crafting his book, as well as his reflections on what it means to be an author. He shared his experiences in a way that resonated with both aspiring writers and seasoned professionals, making it an episode worth listening to. His candor and approachability made for a genuinely enjoyable exchange that offered a fresh perspective on the creative process.

About Mike:

Mike J. Kizman is an author whose passion for storytelling shines through both in his written works and his approach to sharing his experiences with readers and audiences alike. He first gained recognition through his book, where he delved into personal reflections, weaving narratives that are deeply relatable while also drawing from his own life experiences. Mike’s writing is marked by its authenticity, a quality that resonates with his readers and makes his work stand out in a crowded literary space. With a genuine commitment to his craft, he doesn’t shy away from the difficulties of the creative process, often highlighting the importance of perseverance and dedication in achieving one’s goals.

Beyond his work as an author, Mike is a personable and approachable figure, consistently engaging with his community and offering insights into both the joys and challenges of writing. He is open about the highs and lows of his journey, providing aspiring writers with inspiration and practical advice. His ability to connect with others, both through his work and in personal interactions, has allowed him to build a strong following. His appearance on various podcasts, including mine, showcases his willingness to share not just the fruits of his labor but also the process that led him there, making him an inspiring figure in the literary world.

Relative excerpts from the podcast:

Chris:
Welcome to Coffee on the Couch. I’m thrilled to introduce our guest today, the talented author, Mike J. Kizman. That’s how you say it, right, Kizman?

Mike J. Kizman:
Yes, sir.

Chris:
Okay. Mike has just published his first book, Afternoon Rebecca, a remarkable exploration of the Christian dating world in modern-day America. This book is more than just a narrative. It’s a thoughtful commentary on relationships, faith, and the challenges young adults face today. Hats off to you, Mike, for bringing such a high-quality work into the world.

So grab your cup of coffee and get ready for an inspiring conversation that dives into the heart of love and authenticity. So welcome, Mike.

Mike J. Kizman:
All right. Good to be here. Good to be here.

Chris:
Thank you. It’s good to have you. So we got connected, like we were saying before we were recording, we got connected by a mutual contact, Kaylee Keys, her book. And we had corresponded back and forth a few times, and we just happened to get this going. So that’s pretty cool.

Mike J. Kizman:
Yes, it was great to meet you.

So first question, what’s the inspiration behind this story? Afternoon Rebecca blends romance with personal growth and community dynamics. Can you share the inspiration behind the story and how you developed the characters of Jeff and Rebecca?

Afternoon Rebecca

Mike J. Kizman:
Yeah, it’s kind of… long twisted story, if you don’t mind, I’ll try to be as succinct as possible. But back in 1991, I was working, I was a dishwasher at a restaurant here in town that was similar, based similarly to the one we find in Afternoon Rebecca. And I had an idea back then to write a story. I was going to call it Fine Dining. And it was a kind of a similar concept where a couple is out on a date and then some of the stories of some of the workers who work there.

And I tried to write that. And I was very young, like 21. I just wasn’t able to do that. So I, you know, put it on the back burner, you know. I always wanted to be a writer.

Chris LaFreniere

Chris LaFreniere

From an early age, Chris LaFreniere became interested in the written word, as well as finding his voice. He was quite regularly told by teachers, both in a positive way as well as a negative way, that his style of writing was akin to the way he thought. In one encounter with a teacher, she advised him that he should go into journalism because she believed he would do well.

Chris has been writing for close to a decade now, starting off as simply a way to get his views and opinions out via a blog, which over time has morphed into a more polished style as well as a new arena. One of which some individuals have referred to as “citizen journalism.” Writing is a passion for Chris and a place where he truly believes he’s found his voice. He also presently works as a copywriter.
