What a great night of sleep. That memory foam bed…WOW! Peace and quiet. I woke up and came out to the porch to await the thunderstorm and think on the good things in my life. I also headed over to the main office to tell them about the broken handle and within minutes I had a repairman fix the toilet handle.
My wife and I ate breakfast and decided to kick back. I wrote for a while. (I have a couple of books I am working on.) She crocheted. At some point I suggested we head downtown to Lake George. That was when a lot of the storm hit. It was amazing! (And it cleared out the rest of the day. Check out this link to one of the blasts less than ½ a mile from us.) We drove around for a bit just to see what was happening. A lot of classic cars are here for the show already. (We will be down there later tonight to view.) {{more}}
After checking things out we decided on an early lunch. We headed back into the hamlet where we are staying. Driving through we went to a place called Luck-E-Star Café Restaurant. We had been there a few years ago, and decided “why not”. We had a great waitress (Her son had just started kindergarten and he was there. Cute kid.), and the food was good. Always go local when you can.
We left the restaurant and the skies were blue again. The wind had picked up and was drying things out. I came back to the cabin and sat on the porch for a bit. Not much later, I was lying down, power napping for a few minutes.
My wife woke me to tell me our oldest granddaughter’s school was in lock down. We prayed and I just thought, “things are going to be okay!” And about a half hour later we got the news that it was.
We were there for a few hours watching the cars pass on by. A couple of ProStocks, multiple Mustangs, Nova’s and Chevelle’s were there, as well as a hopped-up Vega. Oh, there were lots of cars. Some of my faves tonight were the flame throwing diesel car, one of the ProStocks (Uhhh…a wheelie at the traffic light.), a gorgeous Javelin and a mean Nova.
As the night grew cooler and dinner needed to be eaten, we left the growling cars until tomorrow.
Breakfast for dinner was our tonight meal, and then kick back and be thankful for such a great day.
This vacation is important to me for many reasons. Some of the big ones, are the reminder of days gone by, when I was a child and I spent time here in the Adirondacks with my folks. You may never go the restaurant I went to, but I shared it to let you know there are good people everywhere you and I go. There is beauty in the darkness, goodness in the midst of the dreary times.
Maybe you never camped (Though, clearly this is NOT really camping. Let’s be honest about it. ) and never have a thought in your head about it. Or maybe you thought about it and thought it would take too much to go.
When I was a child, our folks started out in a little cabin on Schroon Lake. It was the way I thought life was. Raccoons, bears, chipmunks and squirrels. Going out on the point to pick blueberries, eating the fish we caught and cleaned. Rowboats and motorboats, swimming and tether ball, summers were fun.
Despite that experience, the car having hardly been loaded and heading back, my mom was there with here notes of what we needed the next time. And so it was. A future of amazing camping, family and adventure.
As I read before going to sleep, I thought of how this is a life that has been worth living.
