Exploring the Galaxy of Sound

We are here with Cosmic Error, the original SouthCentral CT based rock band, ready to explore their unique galaxy of sound.  They are a rock band with a unique twist, topped with strong vocals and a funky edge that will keep you grooving.  Read on to learn more about this upcoming band and their new music!

1. How did the band come together?

So chronologically, this journey started out sometime around late of 2019. It was my friend Mel K. who was on vocals, Me using a Kay G116B guitar, Fender Jazz Bass, a Casio SA-1 and a TR-808 drum machine to fill out the sound. We were just doing it to have fun. Unfortunately, Mel had passed away in September of 2020. It was a massive loss, and I was lost for a while, but I wanted to continue what we started I had a mission; I have a promise to keep. So, the search for a drummer was on. I heard this drummer H.G. Siewert on a mutual friend’s album and then it just hit me that. That was who I wanted to form this deep rhythmic musical connection with. We finally formed in August of 2021 in H.G.’s Basement. He knew a guitarist from craigslist named Jamie O. We had a jam then developed as a three piece at the time and before we knew it, in three weeks’ time, we had a residency at a club in Norwalk, CT called Saltwater, by then I had convinced Kyler White to be our front man. So, everyone could respectively focus on their own instrument, our first official show was in September 2021 in Southport, CT a fun little bar called the Horseshoe Cafe, and we went by the name the Electric Octopus Gang. Then in time we redid the name a few times at one point we were going by BLK THNDR and finally became the interplanetary terror COSMIC ERROR! We have always kept the mission statement: Peace, love and unity in the community.

2. What is the creative process like when writing music?

So normally in a room full of 6 musicians, there is a lot of commotional chaos. Come to think of it any room full of any number of musicians could easily become chaos. So, naturally to demolish distractions and effectively use the allotted practice time correctly someone has to take charge. Which at that point I take the helm. By either reaching into my unfinished song vault or utilizing a key from the circle of fifths, then inform HG to form a backbeat behind that, then let Kyler freestyle, scat, spoken poem or throw some words or theme out there for him to work off of and its worked so far. One of my favorite things we do of this musical madness is the songwriting because inspirational influence is ubiquitous and comes from anything, anywhere all of the time. Luckily for us, we record everything, so all bases are covered.

3. How has your sound evolved since you started making music together?

Every member of any band comes with a certain sound, technique and personality. One of our vast evolutionary chain of changes was the recruitment of our Pianist Marcus McPherson and with that exponentially grew our sound. We’ve had a rough time in our tenure after losing several guitarists due to time constraints, immoveable obligations, or unwillingness to commit. Which all are understandable. Until finally we had come to the democratic decision to recruit my former bandmate and old friend from early 2010’s NLeon Tabb who is an amazing guitarist in their own right. However, change is the only constant and so the sound is always in a constant state of perpetual flux.

4. What is the Connecticut music scene like for you?

The Connecticut music scene is a thunderous blast of astonishingly interesting multitudinous range of great artists, acts, bands and soloists. Most of the time I have met genuine, helpful and willing collaboratives. Unfortunately, there are a few I have met on the other side of the coin, who refuse to let the ego go and to take a step back and view the bigger picture. However, to maintain karmic balance I’ll stop talking about them now.

5. What has been the biggest challenge for the band?

Scheduling is our biggest challenge. We have 6 core members who each have a life outside of the band, with other musical projects. Whether it be solo or substituting for another band to help a fellow musician, in efforts to contend with scheduling conflicts the most effective countermeasure has been that we have all chosen to meet on every Sunday at a specified time. Which has worked out so far.
