Over the course of the remaining weeks of summer, here in New England, I am going to be visiting food trucks throughout the region.
I have always had an affinity for food trucks and street foods. Growing up in New Haven Connecticut, with visits to places like NYC, Boston and other larger cities, I tapped into the street trucks, push carts and even some of the vendors with their hot plates plugged into area business’s electrical. {{more}}
When one of my daughters was in the hospital for a year, I became a street vendor in an Ivy League college city. Setting up tables of jewelry, I was alongside hot dogs, brats and wok food. At some point, I bought a cappuccino cart, adding it to our collection. I helped others with their vending carts.
Over the last year in the Keene area, I have watched vendors, bringing value to the food market, with their amazing offerings on so many trucks.
(I still have a dream for a truck, but the cooler heads of my family have encouraged me in another direction. )
Today I ventured out into downtown Keene. One of the things I look for is value, and while quality is important, most people are spending $10 for lunch. Admittedly, I come from a frugal background, so value is important.
I decided to begin my journey with a truck called Hot Hogs BBQ. I drove down to the free parking lot where they are set up and parked. There were a couple of tables set up and I walked up to order.
Their “deal” of the day, was tacos. Taco Tuesday. 3 for $6 including the tax. Let’s see how we did.
I was cheerfully greeted by Shana, who told me what the special was and what it contained. It was nearing 90 degrees, so I added in a bottle of cold water. Within minutes I was looking at 3 soft tacos, loaded with goodness. They take cards and she asked if I needed a cover. Thanks, but I will be eating these here. Walking over to one of the umbrella tables, I sat down and dug in.
Buffalo Pulled Chicken Tacos stuffed with Slaw, Shredded Cheese and Sour Cream on Grilled Soft Corn Tortillas. The coleslaw was sweet, and the chicken just spicy enough. Just enough to feel full and light enough to eat dinner!
The food was great.
It is a great value for anyone. (And that is important to me.) And the food was great. Not just great for the price, but great. Add in music in the background, a beautiful sky and it was a nice lunch.
Check out the Hot Hogs BBQ at 100 Emerald Street in Keene, NH.
I have 4 other trucks to visit in the Keene area and then I am going to be moving out.
