Today is International Beer Day! A day to celebrate the flavors of hops and barley. To discuss the communities shaped over cold brews, great connections, and people changing the world.
I live in a community with many breweries and a store that sells only beer, exclusively from small brewers. And each of these breweries is raising funds for charities, hosting music events, and fostering community.
Over the years, I have written a lot of stories about beer and breweries throughout the country.
Maybe you are sipping a beer while you read these great stories of creativity, kindness, and possibility! LEGOS, telescopes, technology, and compassion.
- Our first story is about those famous building blocks that cartoons show creating pain in the middle of the night! LEGOS. USA Today shared a story about an 8-year-old boy who received a custom LEGO prosthetic arm. And this is not the first story of LEGOs being used in this amazing way.
- Did you see that telescope? More and more, telescopes are appearing on sidewalks, courtesy of groups and organizations, allowing people to see the cosmos. Good News Network shared a story about this happening. (I lived in a community known for telescopes and an annual stargazing event, called Stellafane.) Fall in love with the view!
- NQTV shared a story about smart cities and all that is going into them. Smart cities assist with everything from traffic management and control to water and electricity services. AI and sensors help cities operate more efficiently and save money.
- What happens when schools ban cell phones from the classroom? This article, reported by the Guardian, showed that despite initial pushback and concerns, students became more focused in the absence of cell phones in the classroom. And they became more socialable when they weren’t staring at the phone screen.
- Have you ever been to a bee hotel? A devastating forest fire destroyed the natural habitats of bees in Australia. And naturalists encouraged the return of the bees with bee hotels constructed with bamboo and wood. And the healing began. Check out this great story on ECO WATCH.
- And in Pittsburgh, WTAE reports on the partnership between the city and a nonprofit, Undue Medical Debt, to save 43,000 residents, $58,000,000 in medical debt. Changing lives by removing the burden of medical debt!
Let us celebrate International Beer Day. It is a reminder to savor life’s simple pleasures—conversation, camaraderie, and the courage to create change.
And remind one another of the value of community and how each one of us can make a difference.
