Lake George: Finding A Place To Stay

Steamboats on Lake George

I have been going to the Adirondacks Lake George for years. Since I was two. My first memories were up on Schroon Lake at Dwight Harris’. A little cabin. I learned to do the “mashed potato” from a girl named Brooke there! (I was 5.) From there, we jumped across the lake to Thirkields with a lakefront lodge. After that, it was Indian Lake.

I have camped, cabin’ed, hotel and motel’ed, as well as some lodges along the way. It was only after we spent some years at a cabin in a campground. One day, my wife came to me and said, “We can get a three-bedroom, two-bathroom home for less money on VRBO.”

So, we did.

Finding a Place

A large kitchen, separate dining room, a large living room, and a super-size screened-in porch. What a great place!

Well, we just did year three, and before we left, I added our reservation for next year! We book this for the family, and the Adirondack Nationals held in Lake George.

What a week!

We got there last Tuesday. Had lunch at the Monte Christo Restaurant on Canada Street. We sat outside on the deck and watched classic cars pulling up on the street. Heading over to the house, Jacob, Tina, and I got settled in. We decided to head downtown and watch the old cars coming in.

For the next few days before the show started, Jacob and I headed down to the streets, armed with our cameras, and drinking it all in.

On Thursday, my daughter and two other grandchildren showed up.  We ended up heading downtown that night as well.

Finding a Place to Park

The house is pretty cool. The kitchen in our place we stayed at was amazing. Granite tops, stainless steel appliances and every piece of cooking equipment you could imagine. And my granddaughter had spent a couple of days prepping sauces, meats and more for our meals together. My wife was doing breakfast, and the boys were cleaning up after. A well-oiled machine of efficiency.

Whether we were cooking on the grill, running the drone for a look at the lake, or just hanging out with one another, it was a great time.

Today, I was asking Jacob on the ride back home what his “high” of our family vacation was. He told me it was sitting on the streets and filming cars cruising by. And the lows? He would not jump on that one. For me, it was getting people organized to go do something and being concerned about finding a parking spot when we got there. I am not kidding about the parking space. By the last night, we had parked up on the edge of a mountain park, and it did end up being FREE! But it was almost a half mile to the street where everyone was cruising. And truly, it was the only space on the road! (And when we went to leave, because they closed the main streets, it took a while to get out of there!

I love the idea that you can see cool cars, be refreshed by views of the lake, and drink a coffee on Canada Street. Till Next time!
