The adage “April showers bring May flowers” may be true, but April showers also bring rainbows, and today is a day to go out and look for them. Rainbows are made by light reflecting, refracting, and dispersing in water droplets in the earth’s atmosphere. Rainbows appear opposite the sun, but are not located in a specific spot—they can be viewed by looking through water droplets in the sky from a certain angle. The colors of the rainbow, from outside to inside, are red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet. These colors are remembered by learning the acronym “Roy G. Biv.”
