For several years, the United Methodist Church in Smith Center, Kansas has participated in Operation
Christmas Child. It is the world’s largest Christmas project that brings joy and hope to needy children
around the world through gift-filled shoeboxes. This year those who helped, from 90 years old down to
4, packed 63 boxes after a soup luncheon provided by Kathy McCary, pianist for the church. The boxes
are preprinted in red and green.

The Smith Center Methodist church also operates the Hardly Used Shop, downtown Smith Center. The
women and men of the church put in many hours to volunteer to make it a success. The board of the
United Methodist Women distribute hundreds of dollars annually to local charities, as well. Some
recipients are people who help worldwide.{{more}}

distributed and now it is up to almost 9 million or more.

The organizer of the Smith Center event is Kathy McCary. She takes the boxes to Phillipsburg, Kansas,
and then they go to Denver, Colorado, and then to Texas, where they are put on a ship. She said Greta

with Graham to distribute boxes in Haiti.

Franklin Graham is the son of evangelist Billy Graham. Operation Christmas Child is a non-
