If you have known me for more than a day, you know the Adirondacks and Lake George have a love affair of sorts. My family and I have been coming to the Adirondacks for over 60 years. My first memories on a lake were at Dwight Harris’ on Schroon Lake. From there we moved across the lake to Thirkield’s staying in their lodge. As we got older we began tent camping on the islands of Indian Lake. I have boated and canoed many of the lakes in the region. Hiked as many mountains.
As I branched out on my own, the car show in Lake George began drawing me on a regular basis. (My first was 1988!) Over the years my wife and I would come up there more regularly. Day trips, lunch trips, weekends, and more. I love the area. I love the lakes, the mountains, the feeling.
For the car show, I usually book my reservations on the “way out the door”. Last year, we stayed in a new area, wanting to have a bit more flexibility. We booked a cabin in a place called Lake George Escape Campground In Diamond Point, just northwest of the village of Lake George.
Last year, I invited the family to join us. It was a great experience.
This year COVID had changed everything. The car show was canceled, but my reservations weren’t. A bunch of us had already been over to Lake George earlier this year. Just to get away and see some different places. So much had been closed and canceled. This year, despite there being no car show, we still headed over. It was my wife and I. We stopped in Vermont to pick up my grandchildren’s bikes and made it to New York. We stopped for lunch and then went to sit alongside Lake George. The weather was beautiful! We walked around town and then headed over to the campground.
Every time I drive over, I remembered trips with my parents. (Fort Ticonderoga, Adirondack Museum, and Frontier Town were just a few day trips.) We arrived and we were greeted by the folks at the store and reservation desk. We had a couple of blips that were unexpected, but I want to shout out for Bret, the maintenance man who helped immensely, and Allie who jumped in to make the rest of our stay AMAZING. It is service like that, that ensures my return trips and recommendations. Our cabin was super.
They took what could have been super negative and turned it all around.
When I was a child, my first cabin/camping experience with parents, included everything from swimming and boating, to shuffleboard and tetherball and walks out to the point to pick blueberries. Lake George Escape Campground has all types of opportunities as well. My grandchildren played mini golf and rode their bikes. (Me, I walked a couple of miles each day and exercised my Adirondack chairs!)
Each night, despite the lack of an actual car show in downtown Lake George, there was no lack of cars available. Vintage cars cruising the main street, with tons of onlookers was no different than previous years. Cars, smoke, gasoline, and more.
We missed not having the actual car show to visit, but the time with grandkids far outweighed the “loss”.
As always we had a great time with campfires, cars, and camping.
Lake George…
