Holy Wednesday
Holy Wednesday takes place on Wednesday of Holy Week, occurring four days before Easter. Although the day is not specifically mentioned in the Bible, it is thought that a few things in the Biblical account of Holy Week took place on the day. It is believed that Jesus was anointed with spikenard by a woman named Mary during a meal at the house of Simon the Leper. It is believed that following this Judas went to the Sanhedrin and conspired to betray Jesus. For this reason, the day is sometimes called Spy Wednesday. Observation of the day varies depending on denomination, and some denominations don’t observe it at all. Particular scriptures and hymns are used in denominations that observe it.
How to Observe Holy Wednesday The day could be observed by reading scriptural texts designated for the day, such as those used by the Roman Catholic Church, the Revised Common Lectionary—which is used by the Anglican, Lutheran, Methodist, Old Catholic, and Reformed churches—or the Eastern Orthodox churches.
