There is a museum near Republic, Kansas that is built over the remains of a Pawnee village. It is the result of a mistake. It was believed that Zebulon Pike had been there, but he actually was at another Pawnee village in Nebraska in 1806.
The land was donated to the state in 1901, and thousands of people came to the dedication of the site and a monument commemorating Pike’s visit that never happened.
The site had about 50 other earth lodges and depressions in the ground can be seen where the lodges stood.{{more}}
The fall event speaker was Duane Gile who showed and explained his research on the Fort Riley to Fort Kearney road of 1856. The military went with the pioneers on their way west. His research came from documents from reports to Congress.
Inside the museum is the very large earth lodge. On the floor are holes where the poles were set and a huge hole for storage, and the burned remains of the poles, and small pieces of pottery. The rooves of the lodges were of thatched grass.
One report to Congress was there was no timber. Nothing. The region is quite hilly and to imagine the areas without trees, Pawnee could see so many things.
The sacred bundle is inside a plastic box hanging from the ceiling, and it is forbidden to take a picture of it.

Stories like this remind us that we all have neighbors, friends and family, in need. That each of us can provide something. (Remember the story of “stone soup”…) One of my greatest hopes in sharing stories of this type is that we might jump up and say “I could do that“.
