That is what I want to bring to young people when it comes to cars.
I just went to a couple of great car shows. Lots of cars. Lots of people. Lots of fun. A lot of them included my family and in particular, my grandson, Jacob.
Jacob is a car buff. Night after night, he will say, “Grandpa, don’t you need a 1970 Mach 1,” or whatever else he sees on a regional barn find site. He knows a LOT about cars.
Years ago, I had planned to buy an older car and build it with him and other interested grandchildren. Then disaster hit, costing me my home and my health for a season. I sold off all my cars that I had at the time in an effort to recoup, to no avail.
My grandson is 16, but I do not have a place to put a car to work on.
He lives and breathes cars. He can tell you facts and figures. His desire is to become a mechanic. He loves going to car shows with me, though in full disclosure, he likes newer cars as well. Recently, a couple of folks let them sit in their cars. One was a 2004 Dodge Viper and the other a 2022 Hellcat.
While we were on vacation (Spending 4 days at a car show!) a friend and I talked about young people and how to connect them to our world. Anybody that knows me, I love the idea of legacy. And it includes cars. I had the luxury of parents and neighbors teaching me about cars as a child. From 1955 Chevys, Mustangs, MGs and old trucks. (My first car was a 1936 Chevrolet Master Deluxe.)
I often think about how we can get young people involved. (I have lots of conversations about young people, work ethics, etc.) I have assembled some thoughts.
How do we help young people want to get involved in classic cars and the related shows? (Or anything!)
Young people can benefit from checking out classic car shows for several reasons:
Historical Appreciation: Classic car shows provide an opportunity to appreciate and understand the history of automotive design and engineering. They offer a glimpse into different eras, showcasing how automotive technology has evolved over time.
I homeschool my grandson and history has become one of his favorite topics.
Cultural Significance: Classic cars are often viewed as cultural artifacts. They represent the styles, trends, and values of the time periods in which they were produced. Exploring classic car shows can be a valuable way to gain insight into past decades.
While many work to destroy history, let’s work to embrace it. I am thinking about a website I own, Powerless Over Cars and this is a point I am considering.

Engineering Mastery: Many classic cars were crafted with a level of craftsmanship and attention to detail that is less common in modern mass-produced vehicles. This can be a source of inspiration for young people interested in engineering or craftsmanship.
I guess we need to change our approach on some levels with respect to schooling.
Aesthetic Appreciation: Classic cars often boast unique and eye-catching designs. They showcase a wide range of artistic styles, from the sleek lines of 1950s American cars to the curvaceous forms of European sports cars. This can foster an appreciation for automotive aesthetics.
Hands-On Learning: Some classic car shows provide opportunities for hands-on experiences. Young enthusiasts can learn about restoration, maintenance, and customization, which can be both educational and empowering.
If only. Many denigrate a younger generation and wonder why they don’t show up. I would give anything to find someone to open their garage to my grandson as many did for me as a youngster.
Community and Networking: Attending classic car shows can help young people connect with a community of like-minded individuals. They can meet experienced collectors, restorers, and enthusiasts who are often more than willing to share their knowledge and passion.
How do we change this?
Inspiration for Future Careers: For those interested in careers in automotive design, engineering, restoration, or related fields, classic car shows can serve as a wellspring of inspiration. They can offer insights into the possibilities and innovations that are achievable in the automotive industry.
We talk about the trades, so what can we do here?
Preservation of History: By participating in classic car shows, young people can contribute to the preservation of automotive history. This can involve not only showcasing well-maintained classics but also supporting efforts to restore and maintain vintage vehicles.
Getting others involved in this thinking changes everything.
Sustainability Considerations: Understanding the design and mechanics of older vehicles can provide a different perspective on sustainability and environmental issues. It can lead to an appreciation for efforts to make modern vehicles more eco-friendly.
Always!
Personal Connection and Nostalgia: Some young people may have personal connections to classic cars through family members or childhood experiences. Attending classic car shows can be a way to revisit and celebrate those memories.
I love seeing the history of vehicles and family when I attend shows. I would love to share your stories.

Classic car shows offer a rich array of educational, cultural, and personal benefits for young people. They provide a window into the past while also inspiring future generations to appreciate, preserve, and innovate in the world of automotive design and engineering.
The next question is this.
How can older classic car show people attract young people?
Attracting young people to classic car shows can be a great way to preserve the legacy of vintage automobiles and ensure their continued appreciation for generations to come. Here are some strategies that older classic car enthusiasts, like myself, and organizers can employ to engage younger audiences:
Promote Educational Opportunities: Emphasize the educational aspects of classic car shows. Offer workshops, demonstrations, or talks on topics like automotive history, restoration techniques, and engineering principles.
This may exist and I don’t know it, or it needs to be implemented.
Incorporate Technology: Highlight the technological innovations of classic cars and how they compare to modern vehicles. Showcase the craftsmanship and engineering prowess of older models to pique the interest of tech-savvy young individuals.
Interactive Displays: Create interactive exhibits where attendees can get hands-on experience with classic cars. Allow them to touch and explore the vehicles (under supervision) to foster a deeper connection.
Youth-Focused Events: Organize specific events or activities tailored to younger audiences. This could include youth car displays, design competitions, or scavenger hunts related to classic cars.
I think we could do amazing things with this one.
Engage with Social Media and Online Platforms: Use social media platforms to promote the event and share interesting facts, stories, and behind-the-scenes content about the featured classic cars. Encourage attendees to post their own experiences online using event-specific hashtags.
I am a tech guy, but I know many aren’t. To prolong the classic car thinking, we can better this.
Showcase Customization and Personalization: Highlight the creativity and individuality that can be expressed through customizing classic cars. Share stories of young enthusiasts who have taken on restoration projects or put their own unique spin on a vintage vehicle.
Send me your stories. My granddaughter was changed by a note in the window of a car from a 17-year-old girl who built a classic car at the Adirondack Nationals.
Emphasize Accessibility: Make sure the event is easily accessible for young attendees, including affordable ticket prices, convenient locations, and public transportation options.
Collaborate with Local Schools and Universities: Partner with educational institutions to organize field trips, workshops, or projects related to classic cars. This can provide students with hands-on learning experiences and expose them to the world of automotive history.
Incorporate Pop Culture References: Draw connections between classic cars and popular culture. For example, showcase vehicles featured in movies, TV shows, or music videos to capture the interest of young fans.
Highlight Environmental Considerations: Educate attendees about the environmental impact of classic cars and discuss efforts to make them more sustainable through restoration and modification.
Youth Ambassador Programs: Establish a youth ambassador program where young enthusiasts can take on roles in event planning, promotion, or hosting. This empowers them to take an active role in shaping the classic car community.
Provide Opportunities for Hands-On Experience: Set up areas where attendees can engage in basic maintenance tasks or learn restoration techniques under the guidance of experienced mentors.

By implementing these strategies, older classic car enthusiasts can create a more inclusive and engaging environment that appeals to a broader range of attendees, including younger generations. This not only helps to pass on the legacy of classic cars but also ensures the continued growth and vitality of the classic car community.
As an older generation, we can work to leave this classic car generation in good hands. I hope and pray that someone in my regional area will see that guys like my grandson are worthy of mentoring.
Here are some final thoughts…
Absolutely, getting young people actively involved in classic car shows is essential for ensuring the continued vibrancy of the community. Here are some specific strategies to drill down on engaging young enthusiasts:
Youth-Driven Displays: Create a dedicated area where young car enthusiasts can showcase their own classic cars or restoration projects. This not only provides them with a platform to share their passion but also inspires others to get involved.
Student Design Competitions: Partner with local schools or design institutions to organize classic car design competitions. Encourage young designers to reimagine classic models or come up with their own unique concepts.
Interactive Workshops: Host hands-on workshops where young attendees can learn basic automotive maintenance, restoration techniques, or even customizations. Provide them with the opportunity to get their hands dirty and learn from experienced mentors.
Youth Mentorship Programs: Pair experienced classic car enthusiasts with young attendees to foster learning and exchange of knowledge. This can be a mutually beneficial experience, allowing both generations to share their expertise and insights.
Classic Car Clubs for Youth: Establish specialized clubs or groups for young classic car enthusiasts. Provide them with a platform to connect, share resources, and collaborate on projects.
Educational Seminars: Offer informative sessions that delve into the history, mechanics, and cultural significance of classic cars. Invite guest speakers, including young enthusiasts who have made significant contributions to the classic car community.
Incorporate Technology Showcases: Highlight the intersection of classic cars and modern technology. Showcase innovative projects that involve the integration of digital elements or sustainability initiatives.
Youth Ambassador Program: Create a structured program where young enthusiasts can take on active roles in event planning, marketing, and execution. This empowers them to play a hands-on role in shaping the classic car community.
Social Media Engagement: Leverage popular social media platforms to connect with young enthusiasts. Share captivating stories, interactive content, and highlight young talent within the classic car community.
Collaborate with Youth-Oriented Brands or Events: Partner with brands or events that resonate with young audiences. This can help cross-promote and introduce classic cars to a broader demographic.
Photo and Video Contests: Organize contests that encourage young attendees to capture the essence and beauty of classic cars through photography and videography. This not only engages them creatively but also provides an opportunity to share their perspective.
Inclusive Language and Branding: Ensure that promotional materials and messaging are inclusive and appeal to a diverse audience. Avoid jargon that may alienate newcomers or make them feel excluded.
