Oona Long and Alese Meyer are helping a village named Muzambalika, Zambia. It is 8,893 miles away
from Smith Center. They have a box in the local grocery store for shoppers to donate items such as
gallon bags, toothpaste, soap, children’s books, wash cloths, Band-Aids, and bottled water. Their goal is
to send 500 care packages to the village.
They have also collected items at football games. This is a STAR Event for Smith Center High School
FCCLA, which means Family Career Community Leaders of America, named WHY SHOULD I CARE?
Alese learned of this need from the Nazarene Church in Smith Center and of Dave Atkins, a volunteer
who travels to Zambia twice a year on mission trips. The village of one thousand had been hit by a
severe drought and it killed the crops, so Alese contacted Dave and asked how she could help. Oona
Long got involved after hearing of this from Alese.{{more}}
a folder and the girls make a presentation to judges at district competition, and they can advance to
state and nationals.
Another STAR Event project by FCCLA, Dress A Girl Around the World, was chosen by Abi Schlatter and
Lydia McDowell. Dress a Girl Around the World is a campaign under Hope 4 Women International,
bringing dignity to women around the world since 2006.
Saturday, November 23, 2019 volunteers sewed skirts in the
home economics room of Smith Center
High School. The fabric was donated and working the concession stand for an athletic event was a
fundraiser for the project. The size of the skirts are tween size, and they also are raising money to
purchase solid color tee shirts to go with the skirts.
One feature on the skirts is a label, said Gaylene McDowell, grandmother of Lydia. She explained that a
label with the logo of Dress A Girl Around the World is
sewed on the outside of each skirt, which is to
deter sex traffickers from taking a girl, because they see the girl is part of a larger organization that is
looking after them.
One of the ambassadors of DAG in Kansas will hand deliver the skirts overseas.
Sharon Black is from Smith Center, Kansas. We welcome her to our team of volunteers.
