There’s nothing better than a hot bowl of soup on a cold evening. For twenty-five years in October, the Thornburg Church has a sale and soup supper, with sandwiches and pie. The evening was filled with smiles and hugs and laughter the evening of October 10th.

“They always have good food,” said Sylvia. The hundred or more people in the National Guard Armory proves that because the event is always packed.

Each year, the proceeds of the soup supper and some auction items are donated to a person or family in need.
A daughter of two members of the church, Sam and Gaylene McDowell, was the recipient this year. Sandy McDowell Henderson lives in Iowa, and her husband passed away recently. He had spent one year in the hospital. {{more}}

The silent auction signup sheet and items were available to bid during the supper. The live auction began at 7:00 p.m. Some of the items were baked goods, canned items, jellies, honey, crafts and floral arrangements. A beautiful cross quilt on a stand, a Redmen autographed football and Lady Red autographed volleyball.

The Thornburg Church is in Smith County, Kansas, just a few miles south of the Nebraska state line. The soup supper was at the church several years ago and since it was difficult for the elderly to go that distance when the weather was bad, the supper was moved to the Armory.

In the summer, the church has the ever-popular ice cream social at the church.

Stories like this remind us that we all have neighbors, friends and family, in need. That each of us can provide something. (Remember the story of “stone soup”…) One of my greatest hopes in sharing stories of this type is that we might jump up and say “I could do that“.
