My wife and I are on our first vacation in 2 years. The last couple of years were rough, with family and friends going through some tough times. We still got in a lot of motorcycle rides, days together, and such, but more than a day off… We couldn’t pull that together…Until now.

A couple of weeks ago, I made the decision that I (And of course her!) needed to get away. She had the time scheduled, but we had no plans. We knew we would get to Lake George New York for the annual Adirondacks Nationals Car Show, but other than that, nothing was in play. {{more}}

All summer long I had thought about going away, but lots of things were going on, so while I had an occasional look at things, I was just not pulling things together. A few weeks ago, I got “serious” about it. AAA, Trivago, etc., and then I remembered I had looked at this site, for RV On The Go. I went back to it. I put in the dates… And stopped, what I was doing. {{more}}All packed up

A few hours later I received a 30% off coupon and yep, we were booked. (My sign from above.) Prices were good to begin with. (I am on “off season pricing”.)

It took me a few days to tell my wife. Just because I wanted it to be a surprise of sorts. I had included my daughter in the process, so she and my 3 grandchildren could join us for a day or so, as they love the cars. (And if she wanted to join us that would determine the size of the lodging. Because Tina and I were coming up early, we could get a great price, but most people know what happens to pricing when it overlaps the weekend and is only 2 days.)

I rented a small cabin, that slept 6. That was all I knew. (Later I found out there was a lot more on site than I thought.
My camping experience in the past has been tents, sleeping bags and Coleman stoves and lanterns. I thought campgrounds were “campgrounds” and this one just had a little cottage like the ones I went to when I was like 2 or 3 on Schroon Lake.)
Once we determined where we were coming to, the process of lists began. Lists for food and meals (Last night was bacon wrapped meatloaf!), clothing and bedding.
Vacation week was soon upon us.
Saturday we chilled out with a motorcycle ride to visit grandkids and a ride through the countryside of Vermont and New Hampshire. Sunday afternoon was our grocery shopping. Monday was packing everything we could into the van. Bedding, clothes packed, and all that is left for Tuesday morning is our refrigerated food.
Tuesday. I am like the kid from the Disney commercial. “I am too excited!” One last thing and we hit the road at 8:30. My wife and I got all of our “political, religious and family concern” conversations out of the way in the first hour. We stopped for a restroom and moments later we were in New York.
As we drove into Whitehall, I grabbed a pic of Bigfoot and my wife saw a sign for a Bigfoot meeting (That appears to be called the Sasquatch Calling Festival on September 28th.) to let us know we were in the right place! We drove down through Fort Ann and the signs for the Adirondack Park and Lake George were soon to follow. We came in the “back way” to Lake George, giving us a view of the lake itself. Down past the Million Dollar Beach and the side wheeler touring boats, we parked.
Now, I consider myself “pretty smart” but my wife had to jump in to use the card for parking. (I wish they used the parking app, they used in lots of places.) I am not sure the system was intuitive for me, and because I was one car away while we ate our lunch, I watched at least 10 people “take their time”, causing me to know it was not only me.
Finishing up, we walked along the beach for a bit. (Our check in was 1.) Refreshed, we headed to the where we had booked. Down along the Schroon River (Pronounced SKROON not SHROON as my GPS would try to tell me!) we found the park. Pulling in, I realized it was w-a-y bigger than I imagined.

I walked in and apologized for being a couple of minutes early. The lady informed me, nicely, that check in for the cabin was not until 4 and that the tent sites were 1. I apologized and turned to leave. She stopped me and said, “since you were nice about it and didn’t throw something like some people, if it is ready, you can go there.” It was ready and we did. Grateful for kind people.

We headed over to the cabin and it looked beautiful We opened the door and I began to bring things in. One my second trip my wife told me, “I could live here for a week.” Yes, I could to. It had 2 TV’s in addition to great appliances and it was clean. I went for a walk while my wife sorted things out. I stopped by the little store and the lady told me she loved working here. (“And if you need anything, just put it up on the counter till your wife gets here. I won’t let anyone steal it.”)

My first two people I met here were friendly and I am reminded that camping reveals the best of what can be.

I came back and my wife had everything sorted and ready. We headed down to Lake George, just minutes away and some of the first cars were starting to appear. As I went to get a parking receipt, a gentleman called over to me and said, “Please take this. There are 2.5 hours left.” WOW! Thank you! We wandered around the village, sitting down occasionally to admire the lake. We ended up on Main Street to “people watch” though really it was to see what cars showed up!

We headed home. My wife cooked dinner and me… I am just grateful.

(The only downside of the day, was the handle broke on the toile, but that is what they make yarn for.)

I headed to bed at some point and the bed was memory foam. (It began to remind me of why I love this region! ) I had a great night’s sleep and Day 1 was a success.
