How to Observe National Cookie Exchange Day

The day should be celebrated by hosting a cookie exchange party, which also can be planned, and held on an upcoming day. According to Jace-Shoemaker Galloway, a few rules should be followed when planning for and celebrating the day:

  • A guest list should be made, and invitations sent out.
  • Cookies should be homemade, and the recipes should be brought to the party.
  • Packaging materials should be brought by guests to bring cookies home in.
  • Bake your own cookies if you haven’t yet done so; use an old cherished family recipe or find something new.
  • During the party: play holiday music, have something to drink available, and encourage guests to wear ugly Christmas sweaters.
  • Have a sampling, swapping, and packaging area at the party.
  • When guests arrive, have them put folding cards that list their name and the name of the cookie in front of each cookie platter, and have them place a stack of their recipes next to their cookies as well.

More on the day

National Cookie Exchange Day, celebrated annually on December 22nd, is a festive occasion that brings friends, family, and communities together to share the joy of baking and exchanging delicious homemade cookies. This delightful tradition combines the warmth of holiday baking with the spirit of giving, creating a sweet and communal experience during the festive season.

The concept of a cookie exchange is simple yet delightful. Participants bake a large quantity of a favorite cookie recipe and then gather to exchange their creations with others. The result is a diverse assortment of cookies, each baked with care and creativity, providing a delightful variety that everyone can enjoy.

Cookie exchanges are not only about the cookies themselves but also about the joy of sharing recipes, stories, and baking tips. This day encourages bakers to showcase their culinary skills, experiment with new flavors, and create beautifully packaged treats to exchange with others.

The process typically involves each participant bringing a set number of their homemade cookies, and in return, they receive an equal number of cookies from other participants. This delightful exchange often takes place at festive gatherings, where participants can sample the different cookies, share anecdotes about their baking experiences, and create lasting memories.

National Cookie Exchange Day is an opportunity to embrace the spirit of giving and community during the holiday season. It’s a time to celebrate the art of baking, savor the joy of sharing delicious treats, and create bonds through a shared love of cookies.

Many participants go the extra mile by packaging their cookies in festive containers or decorating them with holiday-themed elements, adding an extra touch of charm to the exchange. This day not only satisfies sweet cravings but also fosters a sense of togetherness and camaraderie, making it a cherished tradition for cookie enthusiasts around the country.

Be the change you want to see in the world.
