Wisdom That Changes The Future For The Better
Wings of Wisdom book cover by Phil Lower
I have known my friend, Phil, for many a year. (At least 10.) I have eaten meals with him, drank coffee, and listened to his heart.
Many years ago, I asked him to be part of what I thought was and is important.
CHILDREN!
During the initial ask he could not see his way clear to what I was suggesting. That has changed, and we are working together to promote positivity for children.
Despite our best efforts, we cannot get things moving before the end of the year. But, Phil has produced books. Grandpa Owl Books.
First, let me share some facts.
Let’s talk about the topic in a friendly and supportive way, keeping things positive while acknowledging the challenges.
Why Having a Dad Around Matters
Having a dad in the house (or a present father figure) can play a big role in a child’s life. Dads often bring a unique kind of support—whether it’s teaching life skills, cracking dad jokes, or simply being there for big and small moments. But sometimes, due to work, divorce, or other circumstances, dads may not be as present. That’s okay—life happens, and families can still thrive with love, effort, and support.
Challenges When a Dad is Absent
When dads aren’t around much, kids can sometimes feel like something’s missing. It’s not about blaming anyone but understanding the effects and finding ways to work through them.
Emotional Impact
Kids might feel sad, lonely, or even confused if they don’t understand why their dad isn’t around. Sometimes, they wonder if they did something wrong (spoiler: they didn’t!).Role Models
Dads often model behavior like how to handle stress, treat others, or fix a leaky faucet. Without that daily example, kids might miss out on seeing those life lessons in action.Family Dynamics
When one parent carries most of the load, things can get stressful. It’s a lot of responsibility for one person, and kids might notice the pressure on the parent who’s there.Confidence and Relationships
Some kids without a dad at home might struggle with self-esteem or finding trust in relationships. Having a strong support system can help with this.Financial Struggles
In some cases, a dad’s absence can mean less financial stability, leading to challenges like limited access to extracurricular activities or other opportunities.
The Bright Side: Resilience and Support
Here’s the good news: Kids are amazingly resilient. With the love of a caring parent, extended family, mentors, or community, they can grow into confident, capable people.
Mentors and Role Models
Coaches, teachers, uncles, grandpas, or family friends can step in as incredible role models. It truly takes a village!Quality Over Quantity
If dads work a lot or live apart, the moments they do spend with their kids can be really meaningful. A quick phone call or a shared hobby can build strong bonds.Resources and Communities
Many organizations, like Big Brothers Big Sisters or church groups, are dedicated to helping kids and single parents thrive.
What Matters Most
The Dawn Of Wisdom book cover by Phil Lower
At the end of the day, what kids need most is love, attention, and encouragement—whether it comes from a dad, mom, or someone else who cares deeply about them. Families come in all shapes and sizes, and every challenge is an opportunity to build even stronger connections.
When dads are busy working and missing from daily home life, it can create some challenges for the family, but it’s also an opportunity to find creative ways to maintain strong connections. Let’s explore this in a positive, family-friendly way.
Challenges of Working Dads Missing at Home
Missed Moments
When dads work long hours or travel for work, they might miss milestones—like school events, bedtime stories, or everyday moments that build memories.Emotional Gap
Kids might feel sad or wonder why Dad isn’t around more. They may crave more one-on-one time to share their thoughts and feelings.Strain on Relationships
Limited time together can sometimes lead to misunderstandings or make it harder to maintain close bonds.Pressure on Moms (or Other Caregivers)
If one parent is taking care of most daily responsibilities, it can create extra stress or a sense of imbalance in the household.
How Dads Can Stay Connected Despite Busy Schedules
Here’s the good news: Being “missing” physically doesn’t mean you can’t stay emotionally connected. With a little effort, working dads can still build meaningful relationships with their kids.
Maximize Quality Time
- Make the moments you’re home count. Whether it’s playing a game, helping with homework, or tucking them in, focus on being fully present.
- Establish rituals like Saturday morning pancakes or movie nights—they create anchors in your relationship.
Use Technology
- Video calls, texts, and voice messages can be quick but meaningful ways to check in.
- Share a joke or send a “thinking of you” message to remind your kids you care, even when you’re away.
Keep Promises
- If you say you’ll attend a recital or take them out on Saturday, make it a priority. Keeping commitments builds trust and shows that they’re a priority.
Create a Family Calendar
- Share your work schedule so your family knows when they can count on you. Kids love knowing when to expect “Dad time.”
Share Your World
- Talk about your work in ways kids can understand. Sharing what you do and why it’s important helps them feel connected to your life.
Prioritize One-on-One Time
- Even a 10-minute chat about their day can mean the world. For older kids, involve them in hobbies or projects you enjoy together.
What Kids Really Need
While kids might miss having Dad around, what they treasure most is knowing he loves and supports them. Consistent communication and showing genuine interest in their lives can make up for a lot of missed time.

For Working Dads Feeling the Strain
It’s tough balancing work demands with family life, and guilt can sneak in. Remember:
- Your hard work contributes to your family’s well-being, and that’s something to be proud of.
- Small gestures matter. A kind word or hug can go a long way.
- Forgive yourself if you’re not perfect—being a good dad is about effort, not perfection.
Families are adaptable, and with love and creativity, even the busiest dads can maintain strong, loving relationships with their kids. ❤️
