I have been in a group that helps pets for 23 years. I saw a need for people to become more enthusiastic of spaying and neutering their pets. When someone advertises they have 13 puppies to give away, it makes one wonder if they all do go to a responsible home. Back then there was a humane society in Hays, Kansas, and it was the dreaded kill shelter.
I first sold homemade cookies outside of the grocery store to raise money. Eventually, other two ladies and I opened a bank account. We were getting donations for pets and to spay and neuter.
But it wasn’t easy. Somedays I regretted starting this group. We were called by people wanting us to take their pet, find their pets new homes, and we even had a call about an abandoned rabbit.
We did find homes for many dogs and cats. We did do good in our town. Then we received a request to come to the city council meeting. We were curious and nervous.
Children with Pets
When we were approached in the meeting, the city wanted to give us money to help with our program. Wow! We thought we were in trouble.
Now our account begins anew at around a thousand or more dollars, and can easily be depleted by co-paying for spays and neuters.
Now, more local rescue societies have begun to take in animals. Maybe the spay and neuter information has helped, but there are people who think otherwise. We have come up against people like that. I made mistakes, and I also have been thanked a lot for helping with the costs.
Why can’t all cities put money toward spay and neuter where people can request a voucher for part of the cost.
