Apple-Picking Paradise: Embracing Autumn at New Hampshire’s Orchard Oases!

Stepping into a New Hampshire apple orchard in the crisp embrace of autumn is like entering a realm of pure, unbridled charm. The air carries the tantalizing scent of ripe apples mingled with the earthy aroma of fallen leaves, while the landscape dons its finest attire of vibrant reds, oranges, and golds. It’s a symphony of nature’s grandeur, inviting families, friends, and seekers of seasonal joy to partake in a time-honored tradition. In the heart of New England, these orchards offer not only the promise of hand-picked, farm-fresh apples but a tapestry of experiences that blend countryside serenity with the thrill of discovery. Here, in the orchard’s embrace, one can touch, taste, and savor the essence of fall in its purest form.

Since childhood, I have gone to orchards, groves, patches, and farms to pick vegetables and fruits. My family had their own garden. My mom canned everything! I grew up on an old dairy farm and lived in a rural community. When I was 8, I worked for an old farmer. Farms, farm stands, orchards, and more were everywhere.

Each year we would head out to pick whatever was in season. (The worst? Peaches in the hot sun!) And if we did not have time to pick, the car would be filled with baskets of fruits and vegetables. (And yes, I learned that almost anything was food in the outdoors.)

And here we are. The harvest season is upon us in New England.

My children and now my grandchildren have gone with me to orchards to pick apples and more. By more, I loved bringing educational thinking to the table. We still ate donuts, drank cider, petted animals, and rode hay wagons. They had lots of fun and even in their teens, they still love going there.

Visiting an orchard is an excellent opportunity to educate children in a fun and interactive way.

I was able to explain to children how apples grow from blossoms to fruit. Show them apple trees at different stages, from flowering to bearing fruit, and discuss the various stages of the apple tree’s life cycle.

Teaching kids about the different types of apples, their colors, flavors, and uses was on my radar screen. Encourage children to identify and taste-test various apple varieties to understand the differences.

You can discuss the farming process, including planting, caring for the trees, and harvesting. Explain how orchard farmers take care of the trees throughout the year.

Let’s talk about the bees! Talk about the role of pollinators, especially bees, in apple production. Explain how bees help apple trees by transferring pollen from one flower to another.

Take time to show children how apples are harvested. If the orchard allows, let them pick their own apples. Explain the importance of picking apples carefully to avoid damaging the tree or fruit.

It wouldn’t be me, without math. Use apple picking as an opportunity for basic math activities. Ask children to count how many apples they’ve picked or sort them by size or color.

Teaching children about nutrition is super important. Discuss the nutritional value of apples and the benefits of eating fresh, whole fruits. You can also explore how apples are used in various recipes and dishes.

Share the history of apple cultivation in your region and any cultural traditions associated with apples, such as apple festivals or apple-related folklore.

Kids are into “green” so address it. Use the orchard visit to teach children about sustainability and the importance of caring for the environment. Discuss how responsible farming practices benefit both the land and the community.

Encourage children to touch, smell, and examine the different parts of an apple tree and apples themselves. Let them explore the textures, smells, and tastes.

Explain how apple orchards change with the seasons. You can discuss how the trees look different in spring, summer, and fall.

You can instill a sense of respect for nature and the importance of conserving resources. Teach kids to leave no trace, not to waste food, and to appreciate the beauty of the orchard.

If the orchard offers insights into packing and storing apples, share this knowledge with the children. Explain how apples are prepared for market and storage to stay fresh.

Some orchards have Crafts and Activities: Engage children in fun activities like apple-themed crafts, making apple prints, or creating apple-related art to reinforce what they’ve learned.

Visiting an orchard can be an enriching experience that combines hands-on learning with outdoor exploration, making it a memorable educational outing for children. Help them to become enamored with it.

And take time to enjoy it yourself.

Visiting an apple orchard in New Hampshire can be a delightful experience for several reasons:

Scenic Beauty: New Hampshire in the fall is known for its stunning foliage. Apple orchards are typically situated in picturesque locations, allowing visitors to enjoy the vibrant colors of autumn. I go to Alysons in Westmoreland, NH, which has views south, west, and east.

Family-Friendly Activities: Many orchards offer a range of activities beyond apple-picking, such as hayrides, corn mazes, petting zoos, and pumpkin patches. These activities are enjoyable for people of all ages, making it a great outing for families.

Fresh, Local Produce: Picking your own apples means you get the freshest fruit possible. The taste of a freshly picked apple can be significantly different from store-bought ones.

Educational Opportunities: Some orchards offer educational tours or workshops about apple growing and farming practices. It’s a chance to learn about the agricultural process firsthand.

Bonding with Nature: Being in an orchard allows you to connect with nature. It’s a serene environment that’s a welcome break from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

Delicious Treats: Many orchards have on-site stores or bakeries where they sell homemade apple cider, apple pies, caramel apples, and other treats made with their own produce.

Supporting Local Businesses: Visiting an orchard supports local farmers and the agricultural community. It’s a way to contribute to the local economy and appreciate the hard work that goes into growing food.

Memorable Experiences: Whether it’s the joy of finding the perfect apple, the laughter during a hayride, or the taste of a warm apple cider donut, these experiences create lasting memories.

Seasonal Tradition: For many families, visiting an apple orchard is a cherished autumn tradition. It provides an opportunity to create a sense of continuity and make memories together.

Overall, going to an apple orchard in New Hampshire offers a combination of natural beauty, enjoyable activities, and the opportunity to engage with local agriculture, making it a fun and enriching experience for many.

Where do I go? The closest one to me is Alyson’s in Westmoreland, NH. On top of a hillside, with amazing views, it sits. Petting zoo, a store, hay wagons, PYO (Pick your own although 2023 may be a challenge.), beauty, and views.
