Hearing Voices… It Can Only Help!

Positive news 3

Yesterday, I hit a wall. I was sticking to my schedule, checking off things on my list, taking time for myself and suddenly, I was there. Face up against things beyond my control. Things that triggered the pain, feelings of sadness and even anger. (I felt like Wiley Coyote on the canyon wall’s face!)

Instead of “processing” it, I dove into a couple of communications, that I knew would be difficult ones. I had not put them off, but they were not next on my list. I had to work hard to be “kind” but there was a part of me that fought against that. I wanted to vent my frustration. The tension was thereafter the conversations were done. I could have patted myself on the back for keeping calm and moved on, but there was this nagging feeling, that I needed to confront the “darkness” in my life. I just wanted things to be normal. I wanted to see people. To visit my kids and my grandkids. To see friends. To sit down and have a coffee with someone. To hug a friend. {{more}}

(Am I the only one?)

How did I get here?

Earlier that day, I had worked on putting together a story for one of our amazing writers. The story was emotional. A 20-year-old had passed away, and because of the “safely distancing”, mourners drove by the family’s home, to pay their respects. (The article is awesome, and I encourage you to read it. Hundreds and hundreds already have.)

I am not sure how I would have handled that was that my daughter or granddaughter.

A little while later I was reviewing a story about a grandfather and his granddaughter, who lived across the street from one another. Each day they stand on their respective sides of the road and have a dance-off. They do not cross. (Tears run down my face.)

I have 5 children and 8 grandchildren. I am struggling with not seeing them. Knowing they are going through their own deals. Trying to parent, school and juggle things. To not hug them. This is too hard.

Finally, I went upstairs and lay down. I could have just fallen asleep at 5 in the afternoon and never missed a beat.

A wall. I began to process. I realized it was okay to miss the things I miss. Like so many, I miss a lot of the normality, that included seeing family, spontaneous trips to visit and visits from others.

I know I can only do what I can do.

I am not going to give you suggestions on how to walk through this. There are a million out there, and the majority are valid. But maybe you and I don’t need a list. Maybe we just need to let others know we care. And that maybe all we can do.

That is my heart. To reach others.

In the 80s there was a TV commercial. A young man sat at a phone and called a grandparent. The theme of the ad was “reach out and touch someone”. I don’t know about you, but I don’t need words on a page, though I will take them. I want to hear voices and see faces. I want phone calls. I want to change the world through my calls, my voice.

Even as I write this, I see that commercial, where “pre-Alexa” a man is writing on a cave wall, what is needed at the “grocery store”. And finally, he walks off. Words are good. Voices are better.

Let’s change everything today. Let’s reach out and touch someone.
