Positive News… Can It Work?

Positive news and you. Can it work?

Every day, I post a number of positive stories here on this site. Stories about bettered lives, kindness, and more. Things that will give people a better feeling and a brighter day…

Until you read it.

Yes, positive news probably must be read on purpose. With intentionality. And overcome the cognitive dissonance one goes through. {{more}}

Years ago, a Russian news site only ran positive news. Do you know what happened? (“No disruption on the roads despite snow,” for example.) The City Reporter lost two-thirds of its normal readership that day, according to a post by one of the editors on Facebook.

Psychology Today said, “And that, says Ohio State University psychologist John T. Cacioppo, Ph.D., is due to the brain’s “negativity bias”: your brain is simply built with a greater sensitivity to unpleasant news. The bias is so automatic that it can be detected at the earliest stage of the brain’s information processing.” (They also wrote that it takes a 5 to 1 ration of good to bad to have things be balanced. ) It takes frequent small positive experiences to tip the scales toward happiness.

A single large action like a large birthday bash will not provide enough positivity to tip the scales. It takes consistent small positive experiences to tip the scales to happiness.

(Positive News For You on a daily basis will help you.)

What if we have trained the news media to focus on the negativity to support our “habit”.

McGill researchers had this to say, The researchers present their experiment as solid evidence of a so called “negativity bias”, psychologists’ term for our collective hunger to hear, and remember bad news.

Over the weekend, I was reading some of our stories. The story about the young man who made $35,000 in just a few days triggered, “boy is he lucky”. Other thoughts popped up. Was it true? Believable? I think one of the reasons that stories about kindness are better than the cars or the baby stories.

I put together Positive News For You to promote good things, good people and create a feeling of goodness. Some days I succeed.

But, I know this. When I read negative or critical stories I feel down. Many years ago, I went through a discouraging time. I realized that I had become addicted to the news cycle of cable news. I was dying on the vine and never realized why. One day, I traveled somewhere and missed my daily fix. (The whole cycle had begun with 9/11. How many times did I watch those buildings collapse?)

And when I read a positive story, I feel reasonable and better.

When I publish the daily positive news stories, I want thousands to feel the lift. (I read the monthly numbers of cable news and Drudge, and I am like, “why can’t we do that?” ) I do think it is something you have on purposes, as opposed to letting it happen or flow through your news feeds. (I am always thankful to those who share our pages and posts.)

I want people to read a story and say, “I can do that”. Or, “I could do that in my town” or “what an amazing idea!”

I want people to believe for the best. Gather hope and gain momentum.

I await to read the story of the community or town that is so positive people just can’t think of another way to make things better.

Read some positive news and put on your thinking cap!
