Thornburg ice cream social by Sharon Black

Positive news 3

Chocolate, lemon, cherry nut, raspberry-rhubarb, grape nut, vanilla, cakes and cookies made by the church ladies for the annual ice cream social were served outside the church. Thornburg Church is in northern Smith County close to Nebraska.

People from surrounding towns commented they were pretty happy now with a big bowl of homemade ice cream. Two cousins who attended, John Overmiller and Louie Overmiller, sat with old friends. For over 90 years, or as long as John recalls, there has been a Thornburg ice cream social. {{more}}

The church and an old country school are all that is left of the town of Thornburg. The church is well-attended.
Louie Overmiller had great-grandsons playing baseball across the road near the cornfield. Many generations have worshipped in the church over the years. For many ice cream socials in the past, there were bands that played and baseball games won or lost.

The ice cream social is a fundraiser for the Thornburg ladies who support missionaries.
