A Birthday Week of Fun, Food, Cars, and More
This week was my birthday. On July 3rd, I turned 69 years old. It is always a “busy” time for me because it falls the day before the 4th. (A few more hours and my name might have been Samuel.)
As a child, I spent lots of my birthdays on the shores of Adirondack lakes. Schroon, Indian, Lake George, and more. I can’t tell you how much those memories are worth to me.
This year, my birthday was on a Wednesday. My wife, Tina, wanted me to do what I wanted to celebrate. I had coffee with a friend in the morning. He asked me what my “wish” was for this year.
That afternoon my wife and I went out for dinner. I had steak and shrimp, and she had ribs! We talked and then I had wanted to go to cruise night at Frogg Brewing.
I know. I love car shows. And I love all the stories that are behind them. I love the cars, the people and the stories.
1965 Mustang Fastback
My favorite story of the night was a guy named John with a ‘65 Mustang. He had owned it for 28 years. He told us about the day he got it, the kind of car it was when he bought it, and what he had done since them.
There were 38 cars there that night. I got to spend time with my friends Steve and Bob.
Some great cars were there. A very cool Lincoln. A nice couple, Wayne and Lisa, with a beautiful 392 Shaker. (They were great to talk to.) Maybe the Comet. Or the “1st Love” Honda.
I had a great birthday.
I began to get ready for our ride to Lake George for the 4th.
Tina and I got up and took care of things knowing we were going to leave around 9. We packed extra clothes, food, and water.
At 9, we took off. It was about 70 degrees when we left. We have had our motorcycle since September, 2001. Brand new and out of the box. We have racked up over 60,000 miles, driving around the Northeast, New York, and Pennsylvania over the years.
We drove through the mountains of Vermont and New York. Familiar roads over the years. We decided to take the back way, up and around the lake, going through Ticonderoga. (They were getting ready for the 4th of July parade.)
We headed down into the village of Lake George.
Birthdays. Some people hate them. Some people don’t. I consider it a privilege to make it to a birthday, many did not.
Over the years, I have had friends and family at my party. And it has got bigger over the years. My wife indulges me, because this is a time for me to see so many friends, as well as family members.
This year will be no different. Next weekend, will be the big party. And friends from all over will be there.
What better birthday present, than to spend time with my wife, see great cars, ride the motorcycle, be in Lake George, and see friends?
