Where Is The Social Piece In Homeschool?

What about the social piece of school? 

That was asked by a reader. 

The transition from public school to home school has been a challenge for both Jacob and me. 

In fact, going from more rigid schedules, walking down halls, and bumping into friends to opening a laptop, reclining on a bed, and no noise is a BIG CHANGE. And for me, it is having someone else in the home, and making sure we stay on track. 

However, the schedule for both of us will work out and get better. The harder part will be what to do about friends and family. Just yesterday, I asked Jacob how he was doing with the transition. Overall, both of us think he is doing well. But he did say this to me. “I am having a little bit of a problem with the social piece.” 

Overcoming negativity and distraction

Actually, one of the very reasons we made this decision was to help Jacob with the distraction and the negativity and drama that was happening in his school. It became bad enough, that being in school was his least favorite activity of the day.  

But friends? 90% of the time when I would pick up Jacob, he would be riding his bike, or hanging out in the park with friends. (Add in a girlfriend, and well, you can see why this might be a little tough. ? ) 

Homeschool has been a unique experience, even from how I taught with my own children and other students. But in the last few years, a school inside the walls has become unfamiliar to many as well. For Jacob and lots of other students, the messiness has affected the learning piece. (Let us be realistic in this. Adults are struggling with mental health issues; would we expect any less?) 

Homeschool for Jacob has been picking up speed.

Did you ever start a new job and you weren’t sure what you were doing? In some respects, that is the both of us. The bright side is how supportive and communicative his online school is. 

So, what about the social side? This morning Jacob and I went out for “coffee and a scone” and discussed scheduling a bit. He has a few friends who live down here, but currently, they are in the middle of COVID. Of course, that will change. So, the more difficult part is finding others while he is down here at my place.  

It is a high priority for me because it is a high priority for him. Both of us expect to find answers shortly. (Some of it has been dictated by the pandemic, but we will find that resolution.) 

It is important to both of us that the social piece is there, but not becoming so distractive that the school work suffers.

Next time, I will tell you about some of the classes Jacob is taking.
