Happy News! Homeschool Week One And Done! (And No One Died!)

Jacob and I completed week one homeschool
Homeschool week one gives happy news

Happy news in homeschool! Here we are at the end of week one. And no one died.

Actually, the last few days of helping Jacob work through his new schooling situation went pretty well!

The first week of homeschooling with Jacob is done and won. It was a challenge. And it was tough. (I found out yesterday that Jacob had reached out to his mom and asked to come home. In all honesty, that was day 1 of the real pressure, and it does not minimize the stress or the transitory process.) Yet, we made it. ?

And yesterday, we finished the day on a day “Jacob voted” 6 out of 10. Nevertheless, I think we were both hoping for an 8 out of 10, but we will take a 6 over the 4 we were at the day before.  (Happy news!)

It is a BIG transition. At one point Jacob said to me, “I am not used to having someone hover over me.” We were doing a math section at the time. Math expression and terminology. For this reason, I work hard to give him space but being responsible for someone’s education is NOT an absentee status.

Years ago I was in a meeting for one of my children. There were 3 teachers and the principal. And at one point, one of the teachers said “it is not my job to teach, but to provide an environment.” WHAT? Angered, I asked the principal to remove this teacher from the room. I was all done with his ridiculous thinking.

(However, I do think that a teacher has a responsibility to ensure the safety of a classroom, but to be “hands-off”. Well…)

I realize that teaching is hard sometimes and I have high respect for those in the profession. (As mentioned previously, my mom was an educator for 31 years.)  I don’t have a lot of respect for those who don’t become part of the solution. End of rant. ?

I was asked the other day “what is Jacob taking for classes?”

Here is what we have:

  • Algebra 1 (Yeehaw!)
  • English (Starts in a week.)
  • Spanish 1 (Bueno! I just was talking to a friend in El Salvador and said “want to help?”
  • Earth Space Science (He loves science.)
  • American History (Yay!)
  • Music Appreciation (An elective course he is looking forward to.)
  • 6 books to read and provide book reports (He chose these classes including the books he is reading.  )
  • Health
  • Physical Education

Let me just say this. His math and science have been like jumping into the deep end of the pool. I spent nearly 3 hours in one class with him. The transition is real. The difference is immense.

My number one thing about this week of learning is that we learned a lot. And above all, not just about education, but the idea of study patterns and how people process at different ages. Jacob’s generation learns a lot differently than mine. I learned a great deal about what has been taught to him (And others.) and what has not.

I took him home today and getting an email that all is his work is done made my day.

Next time, I am going to discuss some of the missing things I have uncovered and ask how we can put those into the process of learning.

(I would love to hear your homeschool stories!)
